hi,i'm new to the site,just love my new tuber, yesterday I replaced gaskets on starter motor & primary.started it up and blew the oil cap?this is caused from over filling the oil bag but i didn't even touch that?bike was fine prior to the primary &gasket replacement,any thoughts,other posts recomend removing some oil from oil bag but this wouldnt make sence as the oil I added was to the primary(added through the chain inpec. cover, any ideas?

When you put the starter in you may have crimped of the breather hose/s.

was the seat on? I've idled my bike for a few minutes and the oil cap pops off. I have no other oil issues, though I think it happens more often wheb I over fill the oil tank. the urge to put more than two quarts in is there b/c the dip stick isn't acually long enough when the oil is cold.

I have similar issue with oil system pressurized. I have a `97 S1 with 61K miles. Recently replaced 2ndary drive belt. Now I start bike, Pressure light goes out. With tank plug out, I watch level rise; must shut down b4 overflow. Oil from return line is extremely aerated/foamy. I confirmed no lines pinched; vent is open, but I'm "bubbling" when I blow through it to top of the crankcase. Could I simply still be overfilled? I drained it cold when I tore down; then refilled with the usual 2 quarts. I've since drained about 20 ounces, and behavior persists. I can't run more than about 2 minutes before overflow, so I can't even warm it up. Is this "wet sumping"? Might I have an issue with checkball just downstream of the filter? Looking for some input/ideas before I just start tearing apart again. It's chilly in my garage in upstate NY.

Did you get 2 qts. when you drained it? Check the level before and after you change it. You should check the level warm, right after you shut it down. It does sound like it is over filled.

Wasn't thinking when I drained cold. As temperatures permit (me to work) in my garage, I'm draining down and running. So far not able to run long enough to warm the oil before it overflows. But I seem to be heading in the right direction. More to come . . . hopefully before Spring.

Sounds like the oil check valve by the filter. They get scuffed and allow too much oil into the crankcase at rest. You start up, all that air rushes out of the return line which is suddenly full of sumped oil, and the oil bag cap pops off. Didn't push oil out? Seat was off? Change the check valve when it's convenient. Until then, only check oil on a warm motor and do not overfill.

A Sportster oil filler cap, part # 82634-84A, is a tighter fit in the tank filler neck than the Buell part. I had to shorten the dipstick to the low oil groove, but it stopped my leak!
