Hi.

I have a '97 S1 that has a leaky primary drain plug.

I installed a new o-ring from the dealer (completely washed the bike and engine) ... and in 150 miles it was leaking. So, I snugged the drain plug tight ... cleaned the bike and motor ... 150 miles later it's leaking again.

Is there another gasket or washer I should try? The dealer says "this is the o-ring "designed" for this engine". That may be the case, but it's not working.

My drain plug is in good condition. I'd be happy to replace that too ...

What do you guys use -- what do you suggest?

Everytime I take that plug out it costs me $11 for another HD qt of oil ...

Thanks.

- Bud

Put a touch of liquid gasket around the flat area of the drain plug before doing it up.

Bombardier -- should I get another (specified) o-ring gasket, since I "compressed" the gasket in it's use the first time?

Anyone else use any other, non-spec o-ring gasket? Metal washer with rubber? Anything else?

Thanks.

I've never had ANY problem with factory o-rings. I coat the o-rings with a bit of oil before applying.

Are you using a torque wrench to the appropriate specification?

You can try a thread sealant like Loctite or Hylomar.

McMaster Carr has a series of plungers that you can use to stop any oil or fuel leak from a hose or plug -- nice to have in the box for such issues.

You might try a copper washer from the automotive world. Just make sure the surface is clean and smooth.

you can try using some plumbers tape on the threads and getting a new plug they are cheap. Torque to normal specs and you should be good to go.

I personally wouldn't use plumbers tape.

Not sure if it would be any good for the bearings if some got in there.

Since you said the std O ring wasn't helping I suggested what I do with my bike.

Currently have no o ring on my primary or engine drain plug and the Threebond gasket goo is working well.
