I just replaced the front line on my S1 to braided stainless. The Brake fluid was yellow leading me to believe that it was not DOT 5 as specified. When I drained it into a container containing glycol based fluid, the fluid from my front brake stayed on top. The fluid felt different to the touch. I know that you are not supposed to introduce DOT 5 into a system that already had DOT 3or 4 in it due to seal issues. I replaced it with DOT5 fluid(purple) as specified on the master cylinder cap. Brakes feel great. Anyone know of a positive means of old fluid identification short of sending it for analysis? | ||

I have noticed that DOT3/4 will make your hands warm and it is more of a dark yellow color. I have used 2 different types of DOT5 fluids and they were both purple coming out of the bottle, but then the purple went away after a little while, but it did not have much color in the system. Hope this helps. | ||

maybe a good idea to do a master cylinder and brake caliper rebuild.3/4 and 5 dont mix very well. could lead to loss of stoping power. clean the system and put back in whatever you would like and then you'll know for sure |
