03 XBs come with 72 tooth rear pulley and 30 tooth front pulley. The 04 conversion will have 65/27 pulleys. The relative ratio is about the same, but I'm wondering if going to the overall smaller tooth system will have any felt impact.

Also, anyone know if the front sprocket holding tool (Part No. B-45659) will still work with the smaller 27 tooth sprocket? Is there a way to remove/tighten the drive nut without this tool?

Upgraded my 03 XB drive system to 04 XB. Thanks to Dave at Iowa Harley/Buell, got the parts at discount. The hardest part was loosening the front pulley. Had my housemate sit on the bike and apply the rear brake as hard as he could while I tried loosening the pulley nut. I wish he weighed more than spindly 160lbs (lol - I'm a lot lighter). Took many tries because the rear brake wasn't strong enough to prevent the rear wheel from spinning. To pry loose, had to use a 3 ft pipe extension (about 3 1/2 ft leverage). Once the front pulley is loosened, everything's relatively simple. I was all ready to use heat gun to loosen things up, but wasn't needed. Heat gun would probably have helped. I noticed a bit of rust on the nut even though the bike is relative new (7 months old).

I installed Jim's Meganut instead of the OEM nut to lock the front pulley. Anti-seize instead of Lock-tite was used. This enables me to actually apply a greater torque than would be possible with the Lock-tite. Since the Meganut has integral locking flange (which is bolted to the front pulley using two bolts), there's no need to worry about the nut loosening. Am I wrong to use anti-seize instead of Lock-tite??? Any feed back from Meganut users?

I don't remember where I got the Meganut, but just do a search for Jim's Meganut, and you will get many hits. It runs about $40 - well worth it. You can get the socket 1 7/8 ($20), as well as a cheap torque bar ($20), at Sears. Putting back is really easy (torque to 50ft/lb and 30-45degree additional turn - with Meganut, that was two additional holes after the initial 50ft/lb torque)

Try oiling (one of those penetrating type) the front sprocket threading and let it sit for an hour or so before loosening the nut.

Hey all,
I bought a new 04 XB12R recently for reasons that didnt turn out to be good ones, instead of just ordering and waiting for an 06 then getting the custom work done i hoped getting one off the floor would be quicker, wasnt so. Needless to say i have yet to ride it and my question is should i just go ahead and replace the 04 belt now or wait until its needed? I plan on breaking in the bike in late March and taking it to a track day in april so if this is something i should do i want to have it done before im back home and wanting to ride. thanks in advance

What does the Pulley conversion actually do? The final drive ratio is almost identical. Can someone please let me know!!
I love this bike XB9R and would like to have a little lower rpms at cruising speeds.

Steve,
The drive belt/pulley conversion is to allow using a newer belt design which is believed to be stronger.

If you are looking to lower RPMs, you could look at changing to the XB12 primary drive, or go to a chain secondary drive with its adjustability.

Not sure based on the original parts list in the first post, but can I reuse the 03 metal guard behind the front pulley cover? Or do I need a new one?

Also, as someone above already asked...does the master cylinder and brake line really need to be replaced?

The MC and brake line doesn't need to be replaced. The suspension would need to travel through about 6.5 inches before the belt would contact the 03 brake line.

The kit we sell ( http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-p rodshow/17082.html ) comes with an upgraded rear pulley and bolts. It does not come with the guards, but we sell both the CF and OEM plastic ones separately.

Thanks for the help Al. I'm getting ready to place a decent size order with you so I'm trying to figure out what exactly I need. So, just to make sure I'm on the same page...do I discard the inner guard (the sheetmetal one under the front pulley cover)? And if so, what (if anything) do I replace it with?
