I pulled my primary cover off again because of a mystery noise. Once inside I found that the clutch basket seems to have play in it. Is this normal?? It looks like it has made some contact with the case and it may be different when the case is on but the shift shaft can also touch the clutch basket. I think the mystery sound was a loose primary chain but then to see that the clutch basket has play I thought I would see if anyone had any advice before I put it back together. Thanks in advance.

By play do you mean side to side or a "wobble".
In either case there should be none.
Only end play, meaning in and out very slightly.
Is the clutch nut tight?

Sounds like your mainshaft bearings may be shot if the nut is tight..
The clutch basket shouldn't touch anything in the primary case.

Take some pictures and post them.

Thanks Brad

Yes it wobbles.
Nut is tight.

Looks looks like the rest is coming apart.

Are the mainshaft bearings hard to replace?
Do you thing the local HD shop will have them in stock? Of course I will have to act like it is a sportster.

i ended up taking the transmission out and taking it to my friendly local HD shop. I have to say even though they don't sell Buell anymore they are very good to me and help out any way possible. From just talking with the owner, who owns 2 M2's, about Buells and getting help with other problems like the shock, They do take care of me every time. Ok back to the trans. I told them to do what ever they though it needed. They put new bearings, shift drum and a fork. Now that it is back together it is great. The problem that I have has shifting into 3rd is gone and I think it shifts better all around. Thanks again Bluz
