I recently busted one of my front header studs, and I drilled and tapped the head and used a bolt to temp fix, but the bolt's keep coming out even with red loc-tite on them. So i'm going to have to either get the stud or oversize and heli-coil which I really don't want to do. I just can't deal with my dealer anymore so I was wondering if anyone knows where I can get it online? | ||

Is the rest of the exhaust system intact? Usually stud issues are symptoms of another broken or missing exhaust piece. That head probably gets hot enough that red loktite isn't going to help much. Are your new tapped threads intact? They should hold a new stud just fine. Any harley dealer will have them for like $1 each or something. My local Ace hardware store had some as well, though I don't know if they were the same grade steel. | ||

I agree that the stud should hold in good threads. I also believe most studs are grade 8 or better. I have drilled out a fair amount of them. It may help to try a simple grade 8 lock washer to some what hold it in place and keep pressure on it. I would use the stud because you really may not wish to take a bolt in and out all the time. For alignment purposes and to keep the threads in the best shape. |
