I own a 2002 P3 with the same problem. I recently bought the bike (my first bike!) with 5000 miles and a rebuilt top end.

I decided to dig into the problem, install a Clutchlite X-Soft, do a full adjustment, and replace the fluid.

Several things about the introduction to this particular Blast transmission bothered me:

1) The spacer was still on the primary adjustment bolt. This was supposed to have been removed at the 1000-mile service interval.

2) The inside of the derby cover was covered with something the consistency of which was like whipped honey. The transmission lubricant looked and smelled normal after draining. There was no paper gasket for the derby cover. It had a rubberized gasket set into it.

3) There was a moderate amount of filings on the transmission drain plug. I didn't think it was an alarming amount but I am new to this world of motorcycle repair.

I am just getting set to put it back together. Any hints or tips would be gratefully appreciated!

Ah. I read around and found out what the "honey whip" was. Also found many many posts on the adjustment of primary chain, clutch, and clutch cable. I am going to like this!

For those getting the clunk when putting into first gear, try holding the clutch lever all the way in for at least five seconds with engine idling before putting the shift lever in gear. This will (should) give the plates enough time to properly separate and get an oil film between them and also allow the gearset to spin down before engaging first.

Oftentimes this technique rewards me with a silent first gear engagement when cold.

Thanks Sparky, will start trying that.

For my P3, replacing the inner ramp and adjusting everything carefully from there on out helped a lot. I took a spin around the neighborhood and upshifts/downshifts were much improved but the grind was not completely cured (yet).

OK - found that after removing the factory spacer and adjusting the primary much of the grind has been eliminated. Neutral is now easier to find and shifting from neutral to first is now more of a "chunk" than a "grind". I tried Sparky's hint to oil up the plates as well and that helps.
