When I stop at a light and put the bike in neutral, then put it in first, you hear the usual clunk. As I let the clutch out and begin to move,it will jump and clunk again as if it wasn't in gear all the way. It only does it when I put it in neutral, if I leave it in gear it's fine.Any help out there?

Hopefully you just need to adjust your shifter detent plate. The manual shows you how.

If that doesn't do it, you have worn dogs on the first gear pair. It's replacing gears in the transmission, but on an M2 its easy to get the tranny out and the gears are fairly priced.

I second that guess.
Worn dogs of 1st and 4th,their gears engage while shifting into 1st gear. You got to change both pairs on main and countershaft.

Mine's been doing that since I bought it. It doesn't pop out of first, it pops "into" first. Xldevil, can you explain further? What does 4th gear have to do with it? It's fine as long as I'm careful to make sure first gear is all the way engaged.

Dwardo, if that is the case (fully engaged does not have the problem), I would be inclined to suspect your detente plate / shifter pawl needs to be adjusted.

4th gear comes into play because of the design of the transmission. When you are in 1st gear, the power is flowing through a pair of gears. When you replace one, you should probably replace both.

Thanks for info, I'll check the detent plate this weekend. Looks pretty simple in the manual. Hope that's it.

You take the clutch assembly, primary chain, and stator bell off as a unit. Its in the manual that way, but hidden pretty well. An aluminum locking bar is easy to fabricate out of scrap.

The torque value for the crank nut has been revised up (with good reason) from what is in the manual as well. Its here on badweb somewhere... from memory I am thinking 125 ft lbs, but you should probably check. I think that may be backwards threads on there as well.

Check the pins on the shift drum while you are in there... I didn't think about it before, but they can sometimes back out, and that could also cause the symptoms you see.

Also, when you are that far in, you are only about 4 nuts away from having that transmission out and on your bench so you can easily inspect the dogs, and look at that 5th gear drive assembly (which remains in the case). If I was that far in, I would seriously consider popping out the tranny and having a look around. It comes out easily as a big cartridge.

Hey Pat... I responded in the other thread to this same post. Read it if you get a chance.

Pat Mullaney was in the group on my first BRAG ride, some 8 years ago. This was pre-3%'ers and pre XB days. My first ride in the mountains on my Buell was with those guys. I saw Pat do a wheelie, changing gears as he went.... and went flying past Buellish (Mike Powell). Always remembered that.

Reading your post is a blast from the past, Pat. Meet up with us again in October! I only get a chance to ride in North Georgia now on special occasions now.

I see you still have your M2 too. Tore mine apart this weekend and found one of the pins in the detent plate backed out.Put some marks on it with a punch and some loctite and tapped it back in. put a new detent plate and clip on too. That clip is a joke! Took the tranny out while I was there and inspected it as good as I could without taking it apart.Seems to be good for now, but not sure how long it will be before the pins move again.Don't ride the old buell as much as I did , started riding motocross about three years ago with my daughter and it takes most of my weekend riding time. Stll having fun though. Might see you in Oct if I'm not racing that weekend.
Pat
