Hi all, go easy on me as this is my first post here, though I've lurked on/off for quite a while.

I just changed the engine and transmission/primary oil on my girlfriend's XB9S for the first time. This is my first time changing oil on a bike that has separate engine/tranny oil, but I've changed the oil on my own bikes plenty of times. Engine oil was simple, just like any other bike. Started the bike up after, let it run, checked for leaks, checked the level, everything is good.

Next, popped the clutch cover off, drained the oil from the transmission, plug back on, put 1 quart of HD Formula+ in, closed the cover back up. Started the bike in neutral, engine runs fine. Pulled in the clutch, dropped it into first gear and let the clutch lever out just slightly, then the bike stumbled and died on me and the check engine light came on.

Is this just simply a matter of not quite having enough tranny oil? The manual said 1 quart, which is exactly what I put in. However, it did appear that it perhaps could've taken another ounce or so...would that be enough to cause my problem? They only gave me 1 quart at the HD shop, saying that's all I would need. Anybody experienced this problem before?

No CEL for any error in the transmission. Perhaps some error with the sidestand switch. Get the trouble code from the ECM if the CEL is lit.

Regards,
Gunter

Yeah...I'm an idiot. Talked to a couple of guys this morning who also mentioned the sidestand switch, and the more I got to thinking about it, I realized that I may have simply still had the kickstand down. Good gawd I feel dumb.

I was sitting in the garage, just slipping the clutch slightly to make sure it was working correctly, I wasn't actually planning to even pull the bike ahead more than a foot or two, so I don't think I even bothered to put the kickstand up! DUH!

I'll confirm this (the fact that I'm an idiot, I mean) when I get home from work tonight. Feel free to make fun of me accordingly.

Kcander,
I bought my bike from a Harley only dealership. First time in a bike shop in over 20 years. I asked the owner if I could start the bike up to see how it ran. I put it in gear ,let out the clutch and it stalled. The guy let me do it three times before one of the mechanics came over and told me about the kickstand switch. Never had these new fangled safety devices when I was a kid! B.T.W. there were only 5 or 6 "Harley" guys standing around the shop watching me "Clutz out".
