It now comes on after about 1 minute of 4th or 5th gear riding. It goes off after I cycle thru 2 to 1, then back on after a minute in higher gears.

Bad sensor??

My guess too. IIRC, the switch inside the tranny is a 'ball button' activated by a small pin mounted to the shift drum, which only protrudes on one side, no other real way to hit that button from the inside. I think the SM illustrates the procedure to test the switch. Looks pretty easy to get to the switch.
