I have a 2008 Buell Blast and just had my 1000 mile service at Bumpus Buell/Harley in Murfeesboro TN. The engine is now making a whistling/whining noise. The technician told me it was the primary chain that they tightening and that it would go away after a day or two. I have put over 100 miles on it since the service, and it's still making the noise. Is this normal?

I don't know, but it's easy enough to adjust the primary chain. There are instructions on here somewhere for doing it w/o a torque wrench. You might want to readjust it to make sure it's ok.

Chris
Does the whistle vary with engine speed/load or with ground speed?

It only seems to whistle when I'm at a stop or when I'm just taking off. Once I get up to around 20 mph, it stops and then begins again once I'm < 20 mph.

Thanks in advance
Chris

I wonder if this could be a leaky head gasket? Combustion gasses escaping past the head gasket could create this kind of noise.

To check this out try squirting soapy water around the head gasket area, bring the piston into compression by turning the rear wheel in gear and see if any bubbles appear.

I would hazard a guest of an intake leak or maybe a belt problem.

Karma, I bet you're right. The intake boots on Blasts are notorious for leaking. Not the belt, it happens when he is stopped.

Betterdays, try replacing the rubber part in this picture:

They fail often. Keep a spare around. It costs $7.

It was the primary chain being too tight. I was able to loosen it, (after learning how on this site, and with the aid of Jlnance)and the noise has gone away.

Thanks for the advice
