Yesterday my 07 xb12S starting pinging like crazy, sounds like a bag of marbles in there. I know these things have a noisy valve train but this is very loud, can hear it over my race exhaust. I've checked the static timing, and I'm pretty sure that my gas is good (chevron 91), I'm pretty sure that theres no intake leak but don't really know the best way to test that short of spraying carb cleaner on the manifold while it's running (don't really want to do that if I don't have to). Does anyone have an idea what else I should look for, my head gaskets look good, no obvious leaks. Local harley dealer said to bring it in, but I really don't like harley mechanics touching my Buell, that's totally my last resort. | ||

Never ever spray carb cleaner on your bike. Water, WD40 maybe....carb cleaner, NEVER. If you get oil into the combustion chamber, you can have pinging. Typically, pinging that presents itself out of the blue is caused by air getting into the combustion chamber via intake/exhaust/head. For the oil you can look at your plugs under a strong light and a magnifying glass if necessary. Gas dries, oil does not. Gas is black and sooty if burned, Oil is bluish and has a sheen. For the air, spray a sensor friendly substance at your intake seals. You can usuall hear a head gasket leak or an exhaust leak. It kind of has a ticking sound(exhaust) or a chirping/ticking sound(head). Anyway, good luck with your search. | ||

Thanks for the help, I'm going to try running another good tank of gas through to see what happens. Hopefully that's all. | ||
