3rd ride this year. only 500 miles since insuring it and my speedo just died on me.

it was kinda 'intermittent' then it just finally stopped working all together.

i dont have an owners manual so i was hoping to find some help here.

is the speedo totally electronic or does it have a cable?

either way, where do i start looking?

THANKS!

Does the tripometer and odometer not work? Does it do the startup dance? Have you check for a blow fuse? Have you ordered a service manual yet?
Good luck

Its electronic, and there is a sensor bolted into the case. Older Buells, that sensor failed a lot, but all 9s bikes had a regulated voltage for that part and don't typically have the problem.

It has a strong magnet in it, and can pick up metal debris. You might try pulling it and cleaning it if it does not appear to be a fuse problem.

I think it is about a $70 part.

OK....didn't do anything to it yet except ride it to work (about 20 minits). the speedo worked fine.

after work i went for a bit longer ride and about 45 min- 1 hour into the ride the speedo started to bounce and failed totally moments later.

i am doing a chaincase service this weekend so i will get at the speedo sensor then.

anybody have any suggestions in the meantime???

its really wierd.

Starting to sound like a failing sensor. Due clean the pickup off. Should be a allen bolt on the exhaust side on top of the case just inboard of the front pulley for the drive belt, at least that is where they are on the tubers. It's silver in this image but the Buell piece will more than likely be black.

awesome.

THANK-YOU Bad_Karma. i stopped by the dealer today and they printed me off a copy of the service manual pages that tell me how to get at the sensor on my bike. i also ordered my own service manual so i can get to doing more of this on my own, with help from good guys like you.

i will post what happens when i get to the sensor. rite now my chaincase has priority! it was a mess: milky and full of sludge. almost 6500 kms and i dont think the previous owner did ANY regular maintenance at all! i have taken the cover off and sprayed it all down with brakekleenze. i had to scrub it good too! i am gonna let it dry overnite, wipe it off tomorrow and put it back together. THEN i will tackle the crappy sensor!!!!

any tips on how tight my chaincase tensioner should be??? it will be a few days before my service manual arrives

i've had it!

i ordered a new speedo sensor today. when i took out the old one it was pretty much spotless with the exception of some 'residue'....no metal. it had no flaws and appeared to be in perfect physical condition. i traced all the wires for it (to the connector) and no flaws either.

i went for a good ride today and sure enough about 40 minits in the speedo failed.

i stopped for a while and it worked for a short time after starting up again, but failed again shortly thereafter.

how annoying!

i don't really care about not knowing my speed, but the price of a new sensor is minor compared to the price of a speeding ticket!!!

if i have any other issues after the new sensor is in i'll post them.

You might want to go over the grounds on the bike, and the ECM connections, and battery connections, and make sure they are clean and tight.

It was probably just a freak failure, semiconductors can do that. Like you say, if the second one pops, then it will be "an issue"...
