I want to make sure the timing is right on my 99 X1. but the manual makes you do everyting through a breakout box. Is there a way of setting timing without a breakout box???? where can i get a breakout box?

The service manual's breakout box is comprised of two Deutch socket (female) housings, one Deutch pin (male) housing (housing = connector) and six pieces of 18 gauge wire. That is all assembled together to create a jumper between the existing Deutch connectors of the cam position sensor. The remaining female Deutch socket is then connected to the jumper wires via the remaining three wires. Voltage is measured via that last female Deutch socket housing/connector.

You are just looking to be able to measure the voltage between the two (one green, one black) wires from the cam position sensor. Not sure if those wire colors are correct for your X1 or not, so please verify.

Obviously there are less elegant ways to achieve those ends. I'll leave it to you to determine if something less elegant is worth it or not.

ECMspy will indicate the switch point for the sensor to set the timing if you have injected system.
