I have a 2001 Buell Blast that will only start once a day. If I start it, ride it, then park it for a few hours it will not restart. I ride it to work, then when I want to leave for lunch it will just turn over but it will not fire. It has a new coil, spark plug, battery, has recently had a full service preformed. Any advice anyone?

Please describe what you do when starting the bike, throttle action, bike in neutral or clutch disengaged, or both? Kickstand up?

Pull the spark plug when it won't start and see if it is wet or dry. If dry, I'd suspect that maybe the automatic choke is acting up, not working. Will it restart when it is still hot, meaning immediately after riding for 10 minutes or more?

An intake boot air leak would be another possible culprit to look at.

When I start the bike it is in neutral, the clutch is in, I do not give it any throttle and the kick stand is down. I have also tried to push start the bike and that did not work either. It will restart when it is hot, but if it sits for a few hours it will not. How would I check the intake boot?

How would I check the intake boot?

The intake boots are notorious for leaking and causing strange problems like what you describe. It's easier to just replace it than try to check it. They get very tiny cracks which cause them to fail, and you often can't tell by looking at them. The intake boot is about $7. The parts book calls it a manifold coupler, so use that term when buying it.

Yeah, i just put one on my wifes Blast last week $9.00 + tax. Makes it start and run better than ever, Bike had been getting harder to start and loosing torque.

Only two band clamp screws hold it on. Ten minute fix if you take a five minute break!

If it starts when hot but not after the heat soaks I'd probably be chasing electronics. Maybe the ignition module.

When the bike is cold (like in the morning when you'd expect that it would start) pop off the timing cover, put a hair dryer to the ignition module, get it warmed up, then try to start.

Just a thought.

He says it will start first thing when cold, and then when hot, but not after hot and having cooled for limited time.

Sounds like it could be automatic choke related to me.

Try pumping throttle?

That is what mine started to do before it got real bad. It would start when cold enough to activate the choke. When warm it wouldn't start because the choke wasn't there to overcome the vacuum leak.

Bike started and rode fine on Saturday. Monday, It gives me a lot of problems when i try to start it, it starts but as soon as the throttle is off, it shuts down. I got the bike hot and still the same.It also vibrates heavy. It also feels like the air filter is shooting out air, after it shuts down. I changed oil, air/oil filter, battery. don't have clue what to look for.

Between carburetor and cylinder head, the boot that connects the carburetor to the cylinder head at each/either end.

Blake is right on the "intake Coupler" aka "the boot". $15 part. Just replace it - don't even worrty about testing it. Just replace it before you do anything else or any more diagnosing.



Also, If is is vibrating more than usual, check your front isolator too. (Big rubber engine mount right behind the steering head) My blast has gone through 2 now in 8000 miles.

IF your front isolator ($17.00 part) wears out and fails, and you don't notice and you keep riding, eventually the bolts that attach the mounting bracket to the engine will break off inside the cylinder head, or the bracket itself will break. That means: "Big Nasty."

If you see any torn rubber on the bottom of the rubber part of the mount, do not ride the bike!

Thanks for the info, but i dont think its the boot, i changed the boot today, and the same thing is happening again... any more tips on what to check? i ask the buell dealer he suggested checking for spark with a screwdriver and changing the spark plug since i did not change that... and that was not it either. plus when i try starting the bike, the battery died, i charge it again but still it did not start.

Vibration - front isolator - look for cracks, rips, our a flat top to the washer - should look like a hat.
Safety switches - try flipping the center diode - dis ables the clutch switch, if that doesn't work, flip it back and try dis-arming the kickstand switch - another known to shut off at throttle -
A tear in the carb diaphragm could be a culprit, as a bad intake o-ring at the intake to engine, a very loose exhaust, a vacuum leak somewhere it sounds like - the air-screw mis adjusted badly or missing, or finally - primary too tight - if adjusted by manual - thats happened a couple times - I remember - lol

It should be noted that the Blast carb does not have an accelerator pump circuit so modulating the throttle while trying to start may not have expected or desired affects.

In order to more thoroughly rule out the fuel issue, (assuming you have a stock airbox) try blocking off the air intake (left side of bike hidden by a plastic piece of trim) in various amounts (old school choke) and see if you can get the motor to fire. You might need a friend to help you do this unless you wrap something around the clutch lever or something.

i changed the cylinder head seal, and i got the bike started and running for 2 minutes, i got my gear on, came out, put it in first,and the bike stalled, i restarted it, and it keeps stalling after 30- 50 sec. i will bring it to the buell dealer, its probably many things that are wrong.
I covered the air filter hole and the bike wouldnt start, is that a good sign?

Pull the plug lead after it stalls.

Put a screwdriver into it and try to start the bike while holding the screwdriver by the insulated handle with the metal of the screwdriver close to the cylinder head.

If no spark then I would be looking at your coil for a short.

Other than that I do not know about the Blast.

Wolfo68, you can order the boot from your favorite Buell dealer. Personally I recommend you get the Super Boot from Ebay, as it is reinforced to prevent it from breaking again.
