I took the clutch and primary off due to noise in primary, thought I had a bearing going bad, now when you turn the mainshaft it sounds rough like a growl. is this normal? or do I split the case.? the bike makes noise coming from clutch side of primay case but only in neutral, if you put in gear it goes away. i ajusted clutch many times as well as checked belt tension. can't seem to find the problem. need help

I always forget, the mainshaft is the one that couples the transmission to the front secondary drive belt pulley, right?

On my M2, I trashed the 5th gear drive assembly by running the belt too tight. The symptoms of that were that with the belt and primary chain off, and the bike in neutral, you could spin that shaft by hand and it was... periodically crunchy... as it rotated. The needle bearings and their cage were trashed, and the whole assembly had become a plain bearing (and actually ran pretty well that way as I had Mobil 1 Gear oil in the primary).

So if it's an intermittant growl / crunch it could be that, but if it's really a perfectly consistent click click click, that that sounds more like something is rubbing something else, or something came loose and floated somewhere that it wedged itself somewhere.

You might also want to do the shifter pawl adjustment procedure, and check the pins on your shift drum... maybe your "neutral" position is not where it is supposed to be anymore. You will have to remove the clutch assembly, primary chain, stator bell as a unit to to this, and it takes a couple big sockets and an (easy to make) aluminum locking bar, but its not that big a deal to get in there.

To go further then that, you have to split the cases (unfortunately) on an XB.

Oh wait... you have carefuly adjusted the primary chain tension as per the book, right? If the primary chain is out of adjustment, it will do *exactly* what you describe, your chain is rubbing on the inside of your case (not a big deal, but you do need to fix it).

If it were me, I would start with a primary chain adjustment, see if that fixes it, then pull off the primary and see what you can see...
