I have a Special Ops muffler. I love the sound, it's just a little too loud for me. Has anyone ever tried to insert baffle cones to try and quiet one down? Any thoughts? | ||

I opened mine up and installed the perforated tube from a car muffler between the inlet and the outlet. It quieted the pipe down a fair amount, but was still louder than I wanted... especially on decel. If the pipe is just a little too loud for you, this could be the mod for you. | ||

Do you mean you cut it open to do the mod? What did it do as far as performance? THanks | ||

Can you just take it apart and bolt in a tube. You can find one that normally goes in straight pipes. At least my V&H would have been able to use it. I am not sure of a Spec. Ops. You should be able to bolt it to the open center tube. | ||

After riding a few more times, it has grown on me the way it is. It sounds really good. | ||

I like it a little louder, it saves me buying the tach upgrade. And the horn will last longer. | ||

Do you mean you cut it open to do the mod? What did it do as far as performance Yes, I cut it open, welded in the baffle, then welded it back shut. It knocked a little off the top=end performance, but made the midrange much stronger. | ||

even with ear plugs, i found ears ringing after long rides. bought a noj quiet rider, still too loud. odie told me he is working on a quieter special ops pipe. in the meantime i think i have found the answer: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/_Motorcycle-Parts-A ccessories__2-DRAG-PIPE-EXHAUST-BAFFLE-4-1-2-LONG- PAIR-4-HARLEY_W0QQitemZ350059637778QQadnZMotorcycl eQ20PartsQ20Q26Q20AccessoriesQQadiZ2863QQcmdZViewI tem?hash=item350059637778& 12 bucks, shipped, for the pair. pounded them into my exhaust ports and bolted em in through 2 holes i drilled. took it for a test ride. gasp, i thought, "i have made a huge mistake" bike pulled weak, and had a sputter at 4k wot. went back home, put a socket extension in and expanded the baffles. went for another ride... better. came back home, pushed the socket extension all the way in, fully opening the baffles. this was done with wonderful results! butt dyno says that it pulls the same as ever, but is practically inaudible on the freeway. now, airbox honk is a different story. much louder than i realized, but that's okay. i finally can ride my bike without my ears ringing. i am somewhat concerned about backpressure. how much is too much? would i know? the tach still sweeps to redline just as fast, no power seems to be missing... still, don't want to blow a ring or anything. any ideas? | ||

Those baffles are designed as a crutch for a badly designed drag pipe. I'd just find a quieter muffler or go back to stock. | ||

i went for a canyon ride this morning, and everything felt solid. same ride, just quieter. i have ecmspy set up. i haven't done any data logging yet, but i'll try it out and i'm thinking from there i should be able to see what kind of condition i have created for my bike. my spec-ops was a "one-way", no going back deal for me. even a used stock pipe on ebay is about a hundred bucks, and i think those straps are about 20 bucks a go. the bike has a nice warm tone. i think i'm actually pretty happy. no popping/ sputtering/ surging/ etc that you might expect from making and arbitrary modification like that. i'll keep ya posted. | ||

I went back to stock after riding a while with the Special Ops. It had a nice sound to it, but it was just too loud for me. It seemed a bit too obnoxious to be riding in the woods, or around populated areas. I didn't want to be "that guy with the loud pipes". If anyone is interested, I'll be cleaning up the muffler and selling it soon. Pre-order now if you want. I'll post an ad in the classifieds soon. | ||

update: datalogged a few runs in ecm spy. megalog suggested i change a few cells. i think that these baffles hurt my midrange. when i ran using my old map, with the baffles, i had some "sneezing" at 4k wot. megalog cut some fuel from this area of my map, and now it runs smooth, but i think it is missing power here because of the baffles. would need to get it on a dyno to really see what's going on hp wise, but if the only penalty is a slightly weaker low-midrange, i'd rather have my hearing. either way, it's still faster than my stock setup was, so i think i have found an acceptable compromise. |
