Looking for a little help connecting to ECMspy. Bike is an '06 XB12X. I downloaded the software, and built the cable. Then I downloaded the cable drivers from FTDI, made it through both parts of the installation with no problems and received a "hardware ready to use" message. My device manager menu shows com port 4 as the serial driver.
I connected to the bike, booted ECMspy, set the cable to port 4 and turned the key on,. Now when I go to fetch EEPROM I receive a "session timed out" message, after that if I click the cable icon it says "please wait until ECM query is finished". I waited up to 10 min with no change. Now if i select com port 3, I get the NAK message. I also tried switching usb ports and using both the xb9/12 and old xb ecm selections in the opening menu, and checked the cable pin-out. I can't seem to get any communication with the bike at all. Any suggestions?

it happened to me also....NAK ERROR....
it means that pc and ecm are communicating but you need one more step to use ecmspy.
i found the mail from Gunter ( ecmspy creator )in which he explains to me how to adjust this problem .
I'm not a computer genius , all i can do is rewrite to you what Gunter wrote to me.
Here we go.....if com 3 show you "nak error" , com 3 is the right port . this is the procedure you must follow:
click on tools and open program preferences ,
switch off "runtime log only"
and use " megalog format"
go back to overview tab.
start logging by clicking on the blue
"floppy disk " icon
start the online mode by clicking the "keys" icon for few seconds
stop datalogging by clicking the "keys" icon again
stop datalogging by clicking the blue "floppy disk" icon again
you will see a message the log file has been closed.

at this point ecmspy works ....well ...i hope so.
anyway be patient and i'm sure Gunter(id073897) will tell you on this topic what to do exactly .
bye Alessio

If the device manager says COM 4, then it is COM 4. NAK error tells only that the software is talking to something, maybe to itself, and does not get the expected response.

Do the hyperterm test as described in the FAQ first.

Regards,
Gunter

PS: I'm not the creator of the ecmspy software. At least not the PC version, most are working with.

Thanks for the reply's.
Gunter- I did the Hyperterm test when I built the cable and when the pins are shorted my key strokes appear on the screen, when I remove the jumper they do not. That is as it should be, correct?
Made some progress Monday. I can connect now after some changes in device manager. I am able to fetch the EEPROM, but I get a NAK error when it is finished. I have it set to "EEPROM fetch: next page after NAK" and mailed my files to ECMspy support. However I am able to run diagnostics, fetch all the different maps, and clear trouble codes. The only feature that doesn't seem to work is the real time data. I only see what is present when I fetch the EEPROM. For example if I make a change to the idle screw the TPS does not change, but if I log out/in and re fetch the EEPROM it shows a different value. One time out of the 20 or so times I attempted to use the program I had a connection that showed active TPS info and the RPM's moved when I turned the bike over, but I received a "need to go offline error" and didn't know what that meant at the time. So far I have been unable to duplicate this "sucessful" connection
Allesio-I have been set to megalog format but i will try the other steps you mentioned, thanks for the info.
It will work eventually and has been more than worth any hassle so far, thanks again to the people who made this possible.

Works a designed. The NAK shows the end of the page.

However I am able to run diagnostics, fetch all the different maps, and clear trouble codes. The only feature that doesn't seem to work is the real time data.

We need a diagnostic log from you. Switch OFF "log in megalog format" and "save runtime data only", then start logging (floppy icon), then go online (key icon). Wait until you get the timeout message "COM: transmission timed out", then go offline (key icon) and stop logging (floppy icon). The name of the log file created is shown in the right side of the status bar. Please mail us this file.

Regards,
Gunter

Yep, had it set that way so I could get the files to send in. I recieved a reply from Ralph that informed me that the new version of ECMSPY would be out in a few days. I will record the files you mentioned above and send those in this evening, thanks for your help.
BTW Sorry to post this in the wrong section of KV I saw fuel etc... and thought it should go here, I just recently noticed the section for} ecm support a few rows up.
