i wired my lights to both work when switched to bright (orange & white swap), but i just noticed last night my trigger switch does not work when activated.
does anybody have any ideas on what might be broken/wrong and how to fix it? i was considering opening up the left switch housing the trigger but i don't want to mess it up and not be able to put it back together again..
thanks in advance.

So are they still wired that way?

The switch for flash to pass momentarily gives power to the high beam. So it's probably still working, but turning a light on that is already on is probably less then helpful : )

it's only wired for both lights to be on when switch is on bright setting.
the flash to pass does not work when i have it on low setting (one light only on).

You did not mention what year so I can't check my files of wiring diagrams.

I'm inclined to agree with Bill (Reep) turning on a light that's already on has no visible effect.

it's a 2003 xb9sl.
during the day i ride mostly with just one light on (switch is on low) and it used to be that when i pulled the flash switch both light will be on. now it just stopped working that way but stil both lights come on when i set the switch to bright.
basically i just swapped the parking light wire (always on) with the low beam wire...
has anybody taken apart the left switch housing? is it hard, and how is putting it back together? i think it's the trigger switch that maybe broken or not making good contact.

That makes more sense. I never had that side apart, but in general they come apart and go together pretty easily.

Does the high beam indicator come on when you hit the flash switch? I'm thinking that if the indicator works, the swtich is OK.

If the indicator does not illuminate,
did it ever (before you messed with the wiring)?
If it did then but not now, the flash switch could be defective especially if it has to handle twice the current of two bulbs, or there is some other wiring problem.

If the indicator does illuminate,
the switch is OK but the wiring to the high beam needs to be traced to see what's wrong.

To do what he wants don't you need a double pole double throw switch.

i found the problem and fixed it - the trigger switch contacts inside the housing were slightly corroded, a little sanding on the surfaces cured the problem.

thanks for the tip Sparky, your tip about the indicator saved me a lot of trouble from not having to trace the wiring!

Buell_bert - i just swapped the park light wiring (unused/always on) with the low beam, no need for a double pole double throw switch (which i have no clue what it is)

Gambit, when the contacts corrode you can also use an eraser/rubber. It will clean the contacts and not take much material off.
