This is weird. Ever since I got my 08 Uly the starter would engage normally and seem to push the piston up to compression and not be able to get it over the top. Starter just won't push it through and stops. This is each and every time forever. Sometimes I'd let off start button and hit it again and it instantly fires off. This has been the norm weather engine is hot or cold. When it was 14 above zero this winter she wouldn't start one day at all. I thought it was a normal quirk with the bike. Bike has 11,500 miles. But I test rode a new 08 other day and it started without a complete revolution of the engine. Then tried another. Same effortless start. I bought a new battery (stock). No change. Tech here is going to put another battery in to eliminate that possibility. Any ideas?

The dealer may not be properly charging the new battery before puting it in service. It should be given, I believe, a 10% overcharge on a straight-rate charger for a limited time before being put in the bike. This is to overcome the self-degradation that occurs from sitting on the shelf, and because the voltage regulator in a stock generating system will not allow overcharge on a battery.

Sparky; thanks for the reply. Good info. I'll make sure I diplomatically pass that on to the tech. By the way; the battery was handed to me from parts dept direct off the shelf, as are all batteries. Thanks again.....

How is your fueling, ignition? Might not necessarily be the starting/electrical system, but that is the first place I would start.

Joe. Thanks. This is my thought also. Maybe you don't know but I have had a problem with this bike since day one of surging and rough running above 60degrees ambient. It smooths out in winter or altitude. The bike always has run rough in lower gears. Not true surge but just rough. 1st and 2nd is actually jerky. Useless under 20mph. I think this goes hand in hand with the hard start issue. This hard start thing is exactly like a bike or car that is too far advanced. Starting is a labor for it. But I can't get the point across at the tech level. I'd have slammed a new ECM in that thing on day one. Thanks for your input. Appreciate it. Gary

I believe I remember you taking about this rough running problem. Not sure that we discussed it but you might want to try a different heat range plug as a band aid type fix for the ignition/fueling problems with the bike. If you haven't involved customer service it will be getting warm in the next couple of months might start the process. Best of luck.

Guys and gals,
I have a similar starting issue. When I press the button on my 06 Uly it starts to crank and then slows to a point on the compression cycle to where it almost stops, then fires right up. Has been doing this since I bought it at the end of June. Has never left me stranded or anything just wondering what is causing this.
Thanks for the help in advance.
Shawn
