I have an 03 xb9r and at about 4500 miles the bike doesn't want to shift into first all of the time and it shifts hard into all of the other gears. Anyone have any idea what it could be?

2 things that can cause this is 1) clutch out of adjustment and, 2) loose primary chain.

If you don't have a shop manual I think any other XB9 owners on here could lead you through it easy enough.

Thanks for the response.
I don't think it is the clutch because I brought the bike in to a harley dealer for a tune up and it wasn't fixed. They checked the clutch for me because I let them know of the problem before they did the tune up.

Read the stuff in the Knowledge Vault about adjusting the primary chain and the clutch. It is a fairly easy process for a home mechanic with some tools.

You have to do both and in the right sequence and there are a couple of intricacies to it. But doing it yourself as described there has been the cure for more clutch and shifting problems than you can imagine.

Experience has proven that the factory recommended setting for the tightness of the primary chain is too tight. Or at least, it is better if it has just a little more slack in it. So if a dealer does it "right", it might not be right. And if your service tech was the recent MMI grad that was working at MacDonalds until a few week ago, his heart may be in the right place but he might not know it all yet.

The happiest Buell owners have a factory service manual and do their own routine maintenance and service work. And the very happiest are the ones that found all the info they need to do that in the BadWeb's knowledge vault.

Also check the adjustment nuts on the shifter linkage; mine got loose, backed itself off, and ended up making me unable to shift.
