Hello everyone, new to the site so forgive me if i have made any mistakes. Just a quick question with regards to a exhaust. I recently bought a 2005 xb12s lightning, which had a after market exhaust system on it, yesterday it fell off and was taken from the side of the road before i could retrieve it, being low on cash i dodged up a straight through system and bolted it to the standard headers. Other than being extremely loud, will this affect the performance or even damage the motor in any way?

Probably. The fuel mapping will now be completely wrong, rich in some areas (nuisance) and very lean in others (dangerous). Lean means it runs hot, and you could burn a hole in a piston or burn up the rear exhaust valve.
The ECM will try to adjust, but the range of adjustment it is able to handle is for variations in altitude and gas quality, not variations in "existence of exhaust can or not". |

k thanks reepicheep, is there anywhere on this site that will show me how to put the standard exhaust back on. Not sure how the cable works with exhaust. Is it meant to open when you twist the throttle or does it open itself. When i opened the airbox is the stock ecm meant to sit lose or is it bolted in? Also where does this little spring on the exhaust go to?

No free XB service manuals have been published, just the one you buy (which is worth every penny). You might be able to get somebody to scan the page though... Loosing an exhaust can transform you exhaust into a pole vault, so you don't want to mess with it much. There are specific torque rules, and rules about reusing clamps.
The exhaust is opened by an exhaust servo that goes up on top of your inner airbox, run by a cable that goes down to the exhaust. Rumor has it that it is a pain to route.
A stock exhaust with the valve tied open (or closed) would be far safer for the engine then a straight pipe. |
