Coming home the other night my clutch started slipping. I limped the bike back and thought that I would need to readjust the clutch to get it working again. When I checked the cable adjustment it was tight and did not seem to have moved. I opened the primary to check the adjustment at the engagement mechanism and it was also fine. There was an awful smell in the primary and I opted to change fluid and replace the clutch plates thinking they must be shot. When I replaced the plates the stack was too tall and I had to leave out some plates. I ended up with seven steels and seven frictions, no spring plate. I also replaced the diaphragm spring with a Primo-Riviera Gold spring. After Adjusting everything the clutch is still slipping. It is better than it was, but still not right. My questions for this knowledgeable group is: Can I install more plates even if the stack comes above stays on the inner clutch hub? Can the lubricant be causing the problem? I used the harley primary+.
If nothing else I am going to order an Alto clutch pack and see if that fixes my problem. I am stumped for now. Thanks for any advise or ideas that you folks may have.

I don't think its possible, but at any rate, you should not have to use more plates than originally installed. Something is not right in the clutch assembly or adjustments. Did this occur after someone did some maintenance on the bike? If so, I'd be suspect of that first. I recommend getting the shop manual and following it step by step in tearing down and rebuilding the clutch and adjustment. That should be all you need unless you find some adverse wear on any items besides the plates. That would be unusual though. Do check everything for wear. Oh yeah, correct lube level is a must, not any farther up than just touching the bottom of the diaphragm spring.

Well, I fixed my clutch. I installed an Alto Carbonite clutch. I also found that the diaphragm spring that I had replaced was bent and not hitting the seat in all locations. Now all is good again. Thanks for the help.
