Hi guy's and gal's, quick question regarding tuning with direct link. The dyno technician where i've taken my bike tells me he can tune my bike but will have to leave the O2 sensor unpluged after he finishes. I know my check engine light will still on but my real question is, is this the best way or recommended? Mods to the Firebolt 12R are full Micron serpent, open airbox, K&N filter, Revs ported heads, 1250 kit pistons etc. I have a map from American Sport Bike that works but seems to need some tweeking after these upgrades. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

I have never heard of leaving the O2 sensor unplugged. Call Al at American Sport Bike, he should be able to point you in the right direction.

If he knows what he is doing with it, he should be able to tune it so that the O2 sensor can be used normally in closed loop. If he is tuning for nothing but max power across all RPMs, he is doing it wrong.


The only real question is whether you've run out of bandwidth in the fuel tables with the mods you have. It's an 8 bit system, when you hit a seed value of 255, you're done. Put one more in there and it is the same as a seed value of 0. There are some other constants that can be changed to override that, but they aren't currently turned on in DL. They likely will be soon.

I agree that if he knows what he is doing he should be able to tune it so that the O2 sensor can be used normally in closed loop. We raced an XB12TT '08 up Pikes Peak this year which runs from 9,200 feet to 14,111 feet. Without the closed loop feedback we'd have not done so well.

Where as it may be a bit tricky, you have to do the right things to get the best performance.

AL did you ever go through the data i sent you on the ecm. the inside files as to everything in the brain.

with that new data you can see areas ecmspy and directlink cant. these are movable. its very advanced stuff not for public use unless you are willing to buy a new motor.

i hope it answered you tuning questions and filled in the blanks.

for the guy who is tuning for pure power you have about 4 steps missed. you need to back up and make a few changes to the ecm core files. directlink cant do. get ecmspy and i can get you this data.
with out doing these steps you will be fighting yourself always.
once these changes are used it doesnt matter what system you use after that.

I've had my XB12 for about 3 months now and really happy so far. The previous owner had Vallejo HD dyno-tune it with a Directlink, it has a special ops pipe and Buell race ECM and open air box/breather kit. My question is can this setup be tuned for more lowend torque v. max HP? My previous Buell was an X-1 with complete Buell race kit and it had monster torque...if you sneezed while pulling away from a stop in first gear, you'd be on your bike in the blink of an Eye. The XB12 is not nearly as brutish and doesn't power wheelie like my X-1 did. Are the XB12s geared significantly different than the X-1s
