Just rode thirty miles to work on one cylinder. Bike started oddly this morning with a couple back fires. Five miles into the warm up she back fired and no power. The Harley shop fixed her up quick with a "anti foul spark plug procedure." Anyone know what that procedure is? Didn't run across it in the owner manual. 08 Uly. And wonder why there is such a thing. Is fouled plugs to be expected to the degree that a procedure needs to exist to correct the situation. It works though. |

Sounds like the line I used to give my parents when I took the Impala station wagon out on the highway (Chevy 350 V8). Honest folks, I am just executing the "carbon removal procedure" on it.
Handled awful, and was too heavy to do much dramatic. But boy did it sound pretty.
So back on topic... thats the first I have heard of an official procedure, so it may be a homebrew (but effective) technique.
When I think I have flooded an engine, I hold it WOT (not pumping it, just hold it open) and crank until it starts to catch. Then try and rev it out for a while to blow out all the goo. |

Reepicheep - Nope. Not a line. Here it is exactly as I read it on an official bulletin.
SPARK PLUG CLEANING PROCEDURE
2008 XB and 1125R - has the ability to clear residual fuel from the combustion chamber if a flooded engine or fouled spark plugs are suspected. This is achieved by opening the throttle to wide open, setting the Run/Stop switch to Run then, turning the ignition switch ON. This will fire the spark plugs for approximately 4 seconds, burning any fuel left over in the combustion chamber. It may be necessary to repeat this procedure several times to allow a severely flooded engine to start. NOTE: Motorcycle should be in Neutral. end. Word for word. |

For the elder models a similar effect could be achieved by running a coil test. This also fires the plugs several times.
