It has come to the attention of those of us with oil consumption problems that the CP pistons used by some have oil drain holes in the oil control ring groove. This allows oil from the groove to drain under the piston, and there are holes above the wristpin in that groove that direct oil to the wristpin for better lubrication.

The SE 1200 kit doesn't have these holes in their pistons, the stock 883 and 1200 do not have these holes and we have heard that the Buell pistons don't have them either.

Can someone confirm this ??

Here are some pics of the holes

Damn....why won't it let me link to pics from my photobucket album ?? a little help here would also be appreciated.

Some folks are wondering if these holes are being overcome by the piston squirters, not draining properly, and perhaps contributing to the consumption issues.

Wiseco pistons have these drain holes also, so I am wondering if anyone running these pistons or similar ones with the holes are experiencing any oil consumption issues.

Do the CycleRama or Revolution Performance pistons have this feature ??

Thank you for your time and experience in this matter

Stock Thunderstorm pistons do have oil holes.
Stock XB pistons donĀ“t have them.
The CP pistons in the Revolution kits do have oil holes.

I used all combinations (even retrofitted piston skirt oilers with Thunderstorm engines) without any oil consumption problems.

Best regards

thanks for the pic bad_karma, those would be the holes. I appreciate the time you took to post that.

The XB's don't have the holes but have the piston squirters, I would assume that Buell would have included them if they found that the squirters put too much oil on the walls and the ring couldn't control it.

The stock Sportsters don't have the holes either.......could be a cost thing brought about by HD.

You know on a sportster(no shock on the bottom) you might consider adding an external pump to prevent wet sumping and losing oil through the crancase venting.

But, from your post, it appears that you guys are having blow-by issues.
