I have just read on the board that the 08 cams are hollow. Can the tuber cams be machined to be hollow?
Thanks
Joe

The 08 cams do have a hole through the length of their shaft, as it is the oil passage to the journals on the engine case side. I'd written in another thread that they were "hollow", which is probably not a correct term, as that would imply that there was an internal chamber that had a similar shape as the external shape. It's just a longitudinal hole through the entire length.

But a similar hole through the older model cams would not serve that same purpose, wince there isn't any pressure fed oil to the end of the cam. So I'm not sure what would be gained by doing this other than saving a small amount of weight. And the weight saved doesn't even have a large rotational moment, so I think the impact on engine spin up would be negligible. The cams would be weakened as a result, for little benefit.

Thanks Al. It is weight that I'm thinking about. Was concerned that I would alter the oil flow to the cams and cause damage.

The primary reason for using tubular stock for race/high performance cams is a strength issue. A tube of a given diameter has a torsional strength equal to or greater than a shaft of the same diameter / material in solid form. Removing weight from the rotating ass'y is also a given benefit but minimal at best on cams the size of what the XL motor uses.

Removing material from the center doesn't increase strength.
