Today I decided to change the oil so I warmed it up and drained it. When adding new oil I got less that 3 quarts in it before it was full. I let it sit for about 15 minutes and started it up with the seat off. Not 10 seconds after starting it the dipstick flew about 5 ft. I realize this means that there is to much oil in it but I dont understand how that happens with less than the "full" amount of oil in it.

Did you change the filter too? And prime the new oil filter before you put it on? I think it calls for you to use 8 ounces or so. It is enough that none will run out when you're putting it on.

Primking is important to getting the oil pump primed and getting some suction going on the supply in the tank.

If you did not get oil moving, it may have just been pumping air and over pressurized the oil bag.

I forget the capacity on the M2, I used to prime the filter then put the rest of the called for quantity of oil in the bag.

Then, at startup, I'd leave the cap off the bag and watch the return oil flow into the bag for a while. Off course the oil pressure warning light would go out too.

But never had the problem you describe. Did you happen to notice how much oil you got out of it when you drained it?

3 quarts is about 1 too many for an M2
Manual says 2 quarts with oil filter change. If you use the Dyna (long) filter you can get about another pint in.

Just drain out about 1 quart from the tank and you should be good.
Make sure to check level after you've run the bike for a bit with the bike sitting level, not on the side stand.
Also, you will find that running it at the lower mark on the stick will cause less spooge and oil consumption.

i too am haveing the same problem with my 98 m2..keeps blowing the d..m cap off.. i am running my oil at the lowest mark on the dipstick,,blew out all my vent lines, new filter (primned with about 6 oz) i am running mobile 1 15w50 oil..if i force the cap to stay on then remove the vent hose, oil shoots out under pressure,, i read that maybe it has something to do with the unbrella valves??? went and spent $30 on cover gaskets today, going to take it appart tommarrow..
ANY ADVICE WOULD BE GREATLY APPREACATED!!!

Sounds like you have over filled the bike. These engines are dry sump until you turn them off and let them set for a little while. You need to pull some of the oil out of the tank. Run the motor for 10 to 15 minutes, come back and drain the oil out. Refill with 2 quarts. Always check your oil just after you have shut the motor off.
I strongly recommend a service manual.
Good luck
Joe
