I'm getting a lot of crankcase gunk in my filter. I'm working on a catch can solution, but in the meantime, should I be rinsing the filter element when it gets dirty? Is it washable? Does it matter? | ||

K&N makes a pretty good filter washing solution. I think it's just mild detergent, but it works better than dish soap. It probably isn't necessary to wash it everything it gets spooged, but your judgement should be good enough. Try running the oil lower in the oil bag and see if that stops the spooge a little (it works really well for me). | ||

wash with soap & water, let air dry overnight, oil, well, just enough. A thin line down the middle ( around the equator ) and in a few hours it will spread. Let it sit, the whole process takes far more time than effort. It's visual & obvious if you need more. How often? If it's dripping gunk, pop it off & see how much is spooged. It's a judgment call, but a few inches on the bottom still gives you plenty of air flow. Better than 1/3rd of the filter? I would clean & re oil. Catch can solutions are easy. Sportster Banjo bolts & hoses, pretty cheap, and I'm using a Cherry Coke custom ( 5 cent deposit ) set up on mine. See profile pick for old can tie wrapped to battery strap. | ||
