Today I did the first 1000 mile engine oil change and transmission oil change on my 08 Ulysses. After reading all the posts I used the standard HD oil filter and Mobil 1 15/50 synthetic in both the engine and transmission. I did notice a little more than one quart drained from the tranny and a little more than 2.5 quarts drained from the engine. A bit confused as the manual says one quart and 2.5 quarts respectively. Is this the norm? I did not add any oil during he first 1000 miles. Bike actually has 935 miles on it. After about a 10 mile ride, I rechecked the tranny and it looks right (I added one even quart). The engine was on the add 150ml mark after the ten mile ride. I added exactly 2.5 qts. to the engine prior to the 10 mile ride.

I can't believe you actually measured the amount of oil that came out.

Keep an eye on both levels. The only thing that would make the oil level in the transmission increase is a worn crank seal (which I don't think you have).

Just keep an eye on it and I'm sure you'll be fine.

What exactly is "a little more"? Since both tranny and engine were above capacity, I'd not be concerned at all. The crank seal issue is only indicated when tranny lube is overflowing/venting and the engine lube is low.

Did you check the engine oil immediately after shutting it down and with the bike resting on the sidestand on level ground?

2.8 quarts were drained from the engine and 1.1 from the transmission. Oil level was checked hot, on kickstand, immediately after the ten mile run. Today I did a 30 mile jaunt and I added 2/10 of a quart to the engine afterwards and now it registers full. This would make the engine oil change 2.7 quarts. The tranny was checked with bike stood upright and according to the photo in the manual it appears to be fine.

Might should have left just the 2.5 quarts as is. That's what I'd do. Note the location on the dipstick and use that as the effective full mark. Keep in mind that after draining the engine oil, some oil remains in the crankcase and other engine cavities. You probably have about 3 quarts in bike now.

That is an interesting thought Blake. You may be right, but I drained 2.8 and replaced with 2.7. I am also sure you are right and a bit stays in the engine. My original thought was the manual says 2.5 quarts, but it was on the full mark from the factory and I drained 2.8. My question was also more of an observation. Actual oil in the engine vs. manual specs. I do appreciate your input though.

I am a new buell owner and i have a 2005 buell firebolt xb12r, I want to change the oil (swingarm and primary) so could someone break it down for me potato head style. I am mechanically inclined but i want to make sure i dont screw anything up. Preferred oil brand and all would be helpful. thanks.
