I thought that I had read somewhere on the site that you should clamp off the oil lines if the bike was to be stored for any length of time, as the tank may drain into the engine. If this is the case, would it be just as effective to drain the tank? The bike is indoors if this makes any difference. (temperature vs. oil viscosity) Also when I removed the body work, I noticed a lot of oil around the front left mounting bolt and signs of leakage (slight) down the left side of the tank.Do the mounting bolts just fasten to the plastic, or there inserts in the tank? I didn't want to take a chance and strip anything. Any advice is much appreciated. It's not that I'm a klutz with tools, I just don't know much about this bike yet. The bike has 18,000 kilo. on it. I've never done it and I've never had a problem. Do you think the signs of leakage might just be oil that dribbled down on the refill? Mine has the same thing and it's from me being nor the most careful when I'm putting oil in. | ||

I would not do it and never have. Clamping the lines may cause them to take a set then you will have to replace them. I just change the oil and filter and start it once and a while to keep the seals wet and relube the engine during the winter. As for the leak clean it up and keep an eye on it. I hope this helps and it is just my opinion. | ||

Gary the bolts are of the well nut design and are none intrusive to the tank. Both my bikes have weepage from the return fitting. I'm too far south to lay up the bikes. Just come out every couple of weeks start'em up and exercise them in the drive way. Joe | ||

Thanks for the advice.Bad-karma-we had 10 inches of snow last night so I guess I won't be riding for a while. I envy all of you guys who live far enough south to ride all or most of the year. Thanks again all. | ||

A fresh oil change before winter will remove the acids that build up in the oil. Running the bike without letting it hit full operating temps will result in water accumulating in the oil & possibly causing rust. So don't. Unless you have to for psychological reasons. ( Which I can completely understand! ) Don't worry about the oil draining into the engine. Just never never check the oil cold & add to fill tank. If the oil has drained into the engine, ( and it probably will ) you will be overfilling and can blow the oil cap into the garage ceiling, ( D A M H I K ) or at least blow oil all over the back tire, seat base etc. Always check oil after the ride. ( I mean when you do check it.... that's not a command to always check it..... ) | ||

Heck I was going to go for a ride just to keep my head on strait and now they are saying 3" to 5" of snow and ice. Guess I won't even start it and muck up the oil tonight. | ||

Aesquire, thanks for the overfill info, and Sir yes Sir I always check after the engine is warmed up ! (L.O.L.) They are calling for another 5-10 inches of snow tonight. Global warming my ass! | ||

5liter, Well I finally got around to checking for the Oil Tank leak and tried tightening the bolts. The one that appeared to to be leaking took so many turns before it started to snug up that I was afraid it was stripped! The other bolts were not as loose, but definitely needed to be tighter. We'll see if it helps in the spring. | ||
