I'am currently working on a customers 99x1 with more problems than I care to go into now. What I want to know is. Has anybody used the 4 wire o2 sensor that comes with the pcIII without the pcIII, and tuned the bike using ecmspy? If so, how would you hook up the o2 sensor?

I have been wondering also.

I am told that the four wires are as follows - One positive and one negative to heat the sensor.
- One to the computer for output and one as a ground reference.

I think that the pos and neg should be connected to the ignition circuit so to be activated on startup and the ground to connected to the frame at some point.
The info wire should be connected as per usual.

This is not gospel just what i have discussed with others who know more than me.

Any comments?

Does the stock Buell O2 sensor have only one wire? I have an old sensor from my Ford Van to play with. It is similar the the sensor that is on the bike. ( The PCIII unit). The two white wires do cause the sensor to heat up. Hooked my Fluke volt meter to the Grey and Black wires. Where I do get readings. .05 and .06 DC volts. Keep in mind this is an old sensor from my Ford van. So with this info,I'll connect the bike sensor this way and see what happens.

Do not know if I would hook up an unknown item into the customers ecm.

Might not end well if it shorts.

Try and find the correct wiring diagram for the O2 sensor to see if you are connecting correctly.

Update - Found info on Boschautoparts.
Bosch sensors are wired as follows -
Black is voltage signal wire
Grey is signal ground/reference wire
two white wires are the heater power wires.

Also - two different types of heated 4 wire sensors - thimble(old and slower heat up time) and planar (newer and heats up in 10 to 30 seconds)
Also a wide band 4 and five wire but signal is in ohms9resistance and will not retro fit to std ecm without convertor.

Hope this helps.

The o2 sensor that I intend to use is the one that comes with the PCIII. It is currently on the bike. I just want to eliminate the PCIII. I do not have the stock (factory) o2 sensor.

Its good to have a partner in crime Bombardier. I'am not getting to work on this as soon as I had planned. Have to do some work that will actually pay the bills. I'll be in contact.
Back to the wiring. The black wire goes to the ECM, and the grey to ground (frame)?

Yeah I guess so. Just in case the engine is rubber mounted and is not a good earth.

I guess the upside is that the only voltage that will come out of it will be between 0 and 1 volt.

OK; Here is the current status of my 99 X1 tuning delema. The bike is equipped with a V&H Pipe,Big Sucker style air cleaner, and a Power commander III. The problem with the bike is that it runs so rich that it will foul plugs in minuts. This bike has been to several HD Shops with no good results. My first steps were to check the gas., for quality and water. Drained and replaced gas. Next, checked the oil,for possible gas dilution. Even though this is fuel injected, I wanted to eliminate this possability. Next, checked for intake leaks. BINGO, found the O-rings to be very bad. Replaced maniflod O-rings. Now thinking that maybe the last shop tried to tune the bike with the bad O-rings is the reason for the over rich condition. Connect bike to the computer to read the PCIII map, and adjust. PCIII not cooperating,The buttons on the PCIII have no effect. Now I connected to ECMSPY (my first expierence W/ecmspy) Detected mapping for a XB9S by kenfeld. Whats this??? Reset the TPS and AFV. No luck still runs poor. Purchased a used ECM off of Ebay. Installed it and reset TPS and AFV again. Still no luck. Now I removed the PCIII from the bike but retained the O2 sensor (4 wire).Still runs poor. Now I compaired my ECMSPY data with that of the Demo data in the ECMSPY. Wow what a difference. First off, this bike will not even run unless the TPS is set at 12.9. Ooops, let me back up. Yes I did the diagnostics, and the trouble codes. Found an unknown and the O2 sensor codes. I have reset the TPS and AFV several times. Of course with the throttle set this high in order to idle, the injector band width is also off the chart. So this is what I have done to finally make this bike run. I removed the TPS and slotted out the mounting holes, so that I could adjust it. Reinstalled the TPS in the stock position and zeroed it. Started the bike. Again the throttle had to be set around 13.0 inorder to run. Now I loosened the TPS mounting screws and adjusted the TPS clockwise to a setting of 5.0. The bike runs incrediblly better. Has run for over 30 min and not fouled a plug. I have not dyno'd the bike yet or taken a Air to fuel reading. Only because my dyno is in a unheated room, and its been a nasty cold winter. 19 degrees below zero om 1-23-08. Suppose to be 40 on Sunday. Maybe I can fine tune then.
Thanks for listening, ANY advise is welcome. Kent
