can someone tell me what the difference is between the m2 and x1 to have such a difference in performance?
x1 = 101 hp
m2 80 ish hp i believe
have a friend looking @ the m2 and wants to be educated before he buys..

Hi Marc,

The factory specs I've seen on M2's is 90's hp, at least for my year M2 which is
a 2001.

The only diff I am aware of is X1's are fuel injected and the M2's are carb'ed. With the mods I have, I am confident mine is putting out over 100 hp. Mikuni 42 carb, Forcewinder intake, D&D race header & exhaust system. It seems X1's have a bit more electrical gremlins, but you would know better than I owning one;)

Based upon my memory:
X1 has a little more aggressive geometry and the upsidedown forks.
M2 is carb'd, X1 is F.I..
Cam in the X1 is set up for power higher up the rpm range, cam in the M2 is set up for power/torque lower in the rpm range.

For me, if I'm a more aggressive rider and tend to ride a lot harder I'd lean more towards the X1, but if I'm a more relaxed rider and am looking for a more all around bike and am looking for a bike for longer rides and more two-up rides I'd lean more towards the M2.

A good rider on an M2 can out perform an okay rider on an X1, a good rider on an X1 can out perform an okay rider on an M2, equals riders won't have much trouble keeping up with each other on either bike.

If the guy likes to work on his own bikes he may prefer the relative simplicity of the M2, but plenty of home mechanics do just fine with the f.i. system, just depends on what you prefer.

I own an M2 along with a couple of other bikes.

ps, your two hp numbers of 101 and 80, the 101hp is probably "at the crank" and that 80hp is probably "at the rear tire". My M2 with a simple rejet and c/f air filter was over 80 at the tire. I don't have the dyno chart anymore. Nice and wide and flat torque curve, just right for my likes.

The M2 has the same frame geometry as an S3. It also has the S3's more relaxed (lower) peg position and is much more prone to dragging them than an X1. Stock, an X1 will out accelerate an M2, but they both have the same top speed.

I prefer the M2 strictly because of the styling. I just like the way it looks.
