Right now I have the stock airbox and oil is leaking inside. From what I understand this is normal. I was talking to Al through e-mail at American Sport Bike and he said the XB rocker boxes may stop this. I want to put on an aftermarket intake like the C.F. one from American Sport Bike. I guess what I'm wondering is if I put on the rockerboxes and the new intake will the oil then just be routed to a different place(wherever I route the tubes) or will it stop all toghether. I don't know if I am confused about this whole concept so I am hoping someone can straighten me out. I know blake has mentioned a leakdown test but if the results are bad where do you go from there(what usually needs to be replaced/fixed?) Thanks.

The XB rockerboxes do reduce the amount of oil into the air box. However if you want to remove
it completely you will need to route the vents to a vented catch can.

This is of course assuming that you do not have excessive blow-by from your cylinders .
A leak down test is a very good idea to check the general condition of your motor anyway.

There are lots of different catch can designs and many many threads on them here on BadWeB.

Well I went ahead and made an appointment for the test. It was $90 at the local dealer. Is there anything I should be aware of before I go for it?

Yes, make sure they thoroughly heat the engine up before testing and they need to test it while hot.

And if they do detect problematic leakdown, they need to identify the source, meaning which cylinder or both, and what component, rings, valve guides, valves, etc.

Any competent mechanic should do all the above without you having to ask. But I'd put it in writing before handing over my bike, and I'd ask for the results to be documented in writing as well. Again, this should be standard practice for any shop being run competently.

If they fail any of the above, take your bike somewhere else.

I don't remember the XB covers making a huge difference in spooge production on my M2. I did have what I thought was a lot of oil spewing into a vented catch-can from the stock breather locations in my M2s cylinder heads. The XB covers and PCV helped a little bit, but not enough to justify the cost of the parts, in my opinion (the ease of routing the breather lines from the hidden PCV valves did make the cost worth it, though).

The one thing that did reduce spewage to the bare minimum was free - I let the oil level in the reservoir down the very end of the dipstick and used a larger oil filter with more internal capacity. This kept the oil volume the same, but lower in the oil bag. The spooge spewage dropped an incredible 75-85%! I also thought I had an oil consumption issue which also went away when I lowered the oil level in the bag. I barely add oil now, even in the summertime. The stuff I mainly drain out of my catch can is clear water with maybe a teaspoon of spooge for every two tanks of gas. I have 40,000 miles on this bike and the oil consumption is less now (by a LOT) than when the bike was brand new.

Try this before you spend money... it can't hurt. Keep an eye on your oil level, though... too low is worse than too high any day.

So it's still the same amount of oil? I guess that would lead me to think you would be giving less to the engine but I guess not.

For those that have switched over to the XB rocker boxes, did you use the stock bottom and the XB top or did you switch both over to the XB? I've got both and was wondering if there was a difference. I may get in there and figure it out myself but I'm in the research stage right now and learning it as I go.

The way it is now I plan on getting the 1250 cylinders (on order), matching pistons, stock heads and the XB tops. Also while I'm down that far I'm changing out the oil pump drive gear (the reason behind this whole mess anyway) and probably cutting down the cam cover just for cosmetic reasons. After cleaning everything up I'm looking to get between 90 and 100 horses at the rear wheel which I think is well within reach since it dynoed 85 a few years back. We'll see.
