I could really use some help. I just completed a 10,000 mile check on my XB9R, 2005. The last two items to check today were the Static Timing and TPS reset.

I checked the static timing per a post here. I installed jumpers off the back of the ECM. Pulled the timing plug and rotated the rear wheel; in fifth gear. First the rear cylinder came up TDC. Funny thing is I only read 3.7 volts max. Slowly turned the wheel till TDC on the forward cylinder came into view and the peak voltage again was only 3.7 and the TDC mark showed the timing was retarded. Much like I’m feeling right now. I adjusted the TDC to the center, buttoned everything up and took the bike for a spin around the block. Everything checked out fine.

On to the TPS reset, turned the idle adjustment all the way down to the point where the butterfly valve became slightly stuck at the closed position. To be sure the VDSTS software was working correctly; I opened the throttle up 1/3 of the way and reset the TPS. I then opened the throttle and it started tracking after reaching the 1/3 position. Since everything appeared to be functioning correctly, I reset the TPS to the zero position. Then adjusted the idle adjustment to 5.5 and started the bike to warm up the engine for the finial idle adjustment. The engine ran smoothly for about 2 minutes and shutdown. I tried to restart but it backfired and nothing. Reset the TPS again, the engine started. This time I wait for the idle to drop and tried to keep it running by opening up the throttle. Backfire and shutdown.

The battery connections are tight and I could find no chaffing wires. I went as far as putting the static timing back to its original position and still the same results. No engine fault codes where generated.

During the static timing check the battery bled down and was unable to turn the engine over. I put a battery tender on it and re-charged the battery. The engine did start after charging.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

How many volts is the battery putting out after being fully charged? Is the bike still stalling? I'm assuming that when you say "shutdown" that you mean the bike shut off on it's own. Could have been a weak battery.

The battery is holding a charge 12 volts. After talking to Al and getting a few ideas I've been able to replicate the shutdowns. With the seat installed and engine running, I bounced up and down on the seat and the engine shuts-down each time. Now I'm looking for a short somewhere under the seat.

I'll let you know what/where I find it.

Thanks

On my XB9SX, it's easy to mis-route the ECM bundle so it gets nicked by the battery terminal.

Don't think its as much a problem one the R bikes, but you can look...

I had a problem with a Corbin seat on my '03 XB9R where the metal mounting bracket had rubbed through the red rubber coating on the positive battery terminal and was shorting the battery. If that's not your problem I would also check the negative battery cable where it bolts to the subframe.

I have a stock seat but found that the red rubber cover had chaffed through. Apparently, when I torqued the positive lead it rotated clockwise positioning it directly under a support structure of the seat. When I bounced up and down it loosened the positive terminal. I have since repositioned the lead and now the bike runs fine ... so far. Tomorrow I'll ring it out.

Ten minutes into the ride, one cough and two miles later the bike quit. Tomorrow I plan on swapping ECM's. I only hope I'm closer to home this time.
