Hi All,
I purchased a 2005 City X at the end of summer and have been enjoying riding during this warm dry autumn. Last week I left work at night and my headlights were out. The spare fused popped on ignition. I've begun trying to track the problem down, but I don't have a wiring diagram. While usually top priority for me is finding a detailed service manual to go along with a vehicle. I'm trying to hold out, being that it most likely will be sold soon to pursue dual sporting.

Anyway, at the headlight connector under the fly screen there are 4 wires: orange/white, white, yellow, black. Right now, on the harness side connector, 3 of the 4 wires have continuity to ground (only the yellow does not). I assume either the white , orange/white, or both should not. Can anyone direct me to a wiring diagram or provides some assistance?

Thanks,
Ken

Your assumption may be incorrect.

One power feed with multiple ground circuits is the norm. This limits the number of "hot" wires that are susceptible to shorting out. A rubbed-bare ground wire poses little/no problem. But I could be wrong. : ) I'll see if I can find a diagram for you.

Understood. I have a basic knowledge of wiring, circuits, and testing but it is not backed by practical experience. It was learned in the past and I've used that knowledge VERY little since. I probably know just enough to tear everything apart and make the problem more difficult than it really is .

Me too. No luck yet with the wiring diagram. Try checking for voltage and tracing the circuits on the other side of the harness.

With all the applicable light bulbs removed.

Crude, but it may help.

Thanks for your time Court, but I can't quite make out the details of the image. Are service manuals available for purchase online or are they direct from Buell/HD by phone or dealerships?

In case this may help someone else, I found the problem and fixed it.
The problem was inside the headlamp housing underneath the two large weatherproof caps where the wires run for the headlights on each side. Upon examining the two wires for each side, I determined that as you cover and seal each side the extra length of wire that bent freely was bending all the way around and touching the opposing contact and shorting itself out. Electrical tape reinforcement to the insulation (bare on one side and almost bare on the other) and guiding a different bend to the wires during re-assembly cured the problem.

Safe Riding,
Ken
