08 ULy. Surges at 45mph and below. 2600miles on it. So far had faulty interactive exhaust control module. Took to dealer today for surging. After all day says nothing wrong with bike. It is obviously lean below 45 mph. Runs perfect at Mt Mitchel Altitudes. Bought bike to expand back road exploration but is useless with the surging. Like a po go stick. Man!! No power commander available. Calling Buell consumer number tomorrow. I use slow even throttle action and expect the new hi tech 2008 engine and fuel injection to perform perfectly. Not asking much for smooth response. Pretty bad when something I used to own in 1968 runs better than the best that 2008 has to offer. Anyone know of an after market ECM that can be attached to the new marvelous 08 Buell ECM to trick it into enrichening the idle circuit. Don't want to fool with mid and upper ranges. What a mess! Didn't buy this thing to constantly be frustrated by it. Sorry for the gripe. Just disgusted.........

Heyfred - Thats a great thread. He has an 08 though, so his TPS isn't adjustable.

Loucksgl - Do call customer service. They are very good.

Check for intake seal leaks, this can cause surging and other throttle response problems.

It may be that nothing is technically wrong. Ulys are surgy down low (I've never ridden an 08 though, I was hoping it was fixed there.) That is usually a problem that only affects very low speed operation, not 45 mph. Note that the shift speeds given in the manual are way too low. I assume it was written for the EPA. Try to shift such that the RPM stay above 4000. Not only does this help the throttle response, but it improves gas mileage as well (that was certainly a supprise to me.)

Since you are doing low speed stuff, you might want to consider the XB9 primary chain mod, which lowers the gearing by 11%. People say it greatly improves off road handling and gets rid of the bucking broncho effect in first gear.

Do you know ft_bastard & chadharris from this board? They are somewhere in TN, perhaps close to you. You might want to get one of them to ride your bike and give you an opinion on whether it's working as designed. Then you'll know whether you need to fix it or enhance it. Besides, they are nice guys. : )

Wow! What great response to my problem. Great information. I appreciate it. I'm very happy with over the road riding. Super bike. Ya see, I'm an old man and lofting the wheel isn't important to me. I like smooth throttle roll on and good manors at low RPM. Surging "is" a problem and its inconceivable that a manufacturer would knowingly allow that situation. TPS voltage sounds right on to me, but, as stated the 08 can not be reset. I'll let ya all know what Buell says when I can connect to them. Great site here. Great!

Gary:

You dealer should be in touch with Buell Tech Services. They have a highly trained and well qualified group of folks who's ONLY job it is to quickly resolve situations like this.

Any problems with your dealer reaching them, just let me know . . . I'm open 24/7 (in fact was awake in the middle of the night the other night to resolve a problem in Italy and Barcelona while the dealers were closed for holiday) and eager to help.

Welcome to the world of Buell.

I made mine adjustable.

I'm an old man and lofting the wheel isn't important to me
Same here, but I like smooth acceleration.
Mine is rock solid smooth from idle to readline.

I meet Eric Buell several years back, he saw the changes I made to my bike and was so impressed pictures were taken of it.

Court - Thanks for the reply to my concerns here. My dealer didn't contact Buell about the surging so I did. I received a reference number and a contact person's name to give to my dealer. Sort of backwards but I think it will get done now. Dropping bike off on Tue due to Holiday. Want to say I never saw such a tight group of people as the Buell guys on this web. Even if I hated the Buell bike I own, I'd keep it just to be part of whats happening here. Yer all great!!! Thanks. I'll keep you posted on the outcome of this. The resultant fix may apply to other members. Thanks again.

I'm glad you like it here. I agree with you. The reason I bought my second Buell had a lot to do with the people I met here.

But even if you got rid of your Buell, you'd still be welcome here.

Check the Engine Temp Sensor, the ECU uses this in openloop mode, and a faulty one will cause the exact problem you have.

i hope you get your issue resolved, ive been waiting to order an 08 because of the changes in the fuel and ignition systems.but now im concerned that there were no improvements.i had a 07 xb12scg which was bought back because it surged and stalled cold, popped on accell and my pipes turned red at idle cold.the dealer had it for six weeks and only damaged it but never fixed the concern, they told me it must be normal.i dont want a brand new bike that needs to be fixed.good luck they are great bikes except for the stupid details

Hey Wieners1; Not sure what to tell you on the surging. I took to dealer and he had it two days. Gave them a typed note where the surging is (actually anywhere below 45mph)or (3000rpm neutral throttle). Told me not to lug it and nothing wrong. I took it home. I currently am riding around the surging et: driving faster than I really want to and using higher rpms to keep me out of the surge range. I figured this is how it would go. There is a little contraption Remus makes that may correct this. Remember, at altitude my Buell ran perfectly. Definitely a fuel delivery thing. I am very disappointed all round. At Buell for allowing this situation with their bikes and at the dealer for not even wanting to discuss the issue with me. I'm automatically lugging the engine. Note: I been breaking bikes in before any one of those techs was born. Would I buy another Buell? Nope! But I love the handling and above 50mph drivability. A shame
On this note: I suggested an intermittent temp sensor or a faulty 02 sensor. I was told either of those would cause bike to lurch obviously. Not surge. Thats all I needed to hear. Out of there.

My 08 Uly is also experiencing surging and I am also disgusted. Started happening after about 500 miles. This is sure as heck not an "as intended" feature since the Uly I rode the first 500ish miles was pure pleasure. (I also demo'd a Uly for 1 hour and had no surging.)

If the dealer treats me like Loucksgl (i.e. nothing is wrong, don't lug) I'm going to contact Buell directly and take it from there. This isn't what I paid for and I'm not going to just accept it as a 'feature' of the bike, you have got to be kidding me.

Also, the surging is easily reproduceable at 3k RPM at 45-50ish and moving slow in 1st gear is now a huge pain because I have to ride the clutch to keep the engine from stalling or else rider faster, which isn't a viable option offroad.

I'll update this thread and/or the forum as the situation unfolds. Going to try to take it in to the dealer on Wednesday.

Man I hate this for you guys. I thought buying the first year was the worst but it seems Buell QA and the dealer network are still falling down.

I remember wanting to toss my new 06 Uly off the nearest cliff 3 months after buying it. Luckily the BadWebber suggestions pulled me through where the dealer network wasn't able to.

The real pisser is the Uly has shown you what a fun and capable bike it can be. When you get a taste for it and then it's taken away by quality issues it just makes it that much worse.

Vent away, hang in there and look to BadWeb for your solutions. When you think you have the problem figured out, insist that the dealer try your solution. It's partly how I got my issues solved.

Good luck.

Guess I'm not the only one with the surging problems. What bothers me is the tech can't find the surging. Either a led ass or doesn't know what surging is. Anyway I'd think a professional would take pride in finding a solution. Guess if it doesn't show on a computer, theres nothing wrong. Don't lug it. Well, look at it this way. I didn't trailer it there and leave it, drive home, come back with the trailer to get it after being without it cause there wasn't anything wrong. Some questions and communication with me would be nice too. Anyway, its a bitchen bike, handling is amazing and power band is fantastic. Light as a feather and fun, fun, fun. Just can't use it for any slow speed work. Just won't do it. Surge drives me nuts. Still not sure what I'm going to do with it. Normally it wouldn't be in my garage a week with that problem. But I like it. May try a Remus fuel delivery system. Don't know. I usually don't display this much patience with a (warranted product) that has a problem but doesn't. ha

I feel the exact same way Gary. But the issue will be resolved or the bike is going to go, I didn't buy it to save money, nor sit around tweaking it just to run, nor to have to hound a dealer about it, nor to be forced to ride certain way. It's supposed to be fun.

Worst case, I'll eat the depreciation and move on. I don't ride to be practical so I don't really care. It's far too early for that though (legal options will come before then), and I should be thankful to be fortunate to have this problem to begin with (and own a uly) and for this problem to be significant enough to get disgruntled. But it is irritating.

I feel a little lame about my last comment because I'm assuming I'm going to get the same treatment Gary did. I still love my uly (rode it this morning). I'll try to withold judgement until the dealer takes a look.

Mojo,

The comment is understandable from the owner of a brand-new Uly that's not running right. Give the dealer a chance to fix it, escalate the problem to Customer Service if necessary, and as a last resort come back here. Odds are the problem will be corrected at step 1 if your dealer is competent.

Gary,

We need to ride some day soon. Maybe we could swap bikes for a few miles so that you can ride one that doesn't surge and I can help you confirm your problem. That would at least let you tell them you know the difference.

I'm trying to get back down there this week as my new fan is coming on too late and the bike is running into an overheat situation. We'll have to get them to straighten out and fix these issues. It has become kinda sad lately, but if I just let them hang the new parts so that I can get it home, I can usually finish the job in a short time.

PM me if you would like. Vern

Well, the dealer claims that it is fixed now, but I don't think he even knew what the problem was. Just reset everything after doing the 1k maintenance and had a guy who owns a uly ride it to see if it was running OK. He said he didn't even have the technical manual yet for the 08 models. So we'll see. Here's hoping it's really fixed. I'll update the thread later on the status when I try out the bike.

The bike is much better but it has still surged at 3k-ish. But it is mostly back it its usual self. Nevertheless, I'm going to replace the ECM with something configurable that actually works if there are any options for this motorcycle.

Really enjoying the 08 Uly but still have the surging. I can just say that at about 3400rpm and under any gear its obvious. Dealer says nothing wrong with the bike. I didn't drop it off cause there was nothing wrong. Its warranty but don't look like thats goiing to work cause dealer says he can't feel the surge and not to lug it. AARGG!!!! Anyway, going to start small with changing the spark plugs. Also will test ride another 08 at a dealer for comparison. I like the bike and I'm trying to ignore the surging but its tuff ignoring surge while trying to run 30 to 40mph. Its really apparant at 50mph too. Don't know why they couldn't pick it up at the shop. Buell tech was called and he told the tech to tell me not to lug the engine. Oh man!!!!!!!!!

If it were me, here would be my to-do list:

1) Call Buell CS and talk things through and get their counsel.
2a) Find a new dealer that is interested in investigating the issue...
or
2b) Pay my dealer their hourly diagnostic rate to go dig into it.

For scenario B... I would be paying them to establish the problem, and then having it fixed under warranty. It shouldnt necessarily be my responsibility, but if I could clean the problem up for $85 or $150 or so out of pocket, thats money well spent.

Etennuly - thanks for offer to ride your "non surging Uly". But mine didn't surge for first two hundred miles or I wouldn't have bought it. And Mojoman - your bike sounds like a mirror problem to mine. I have tried to overlook it and ride around it I like the bike so much. BUT---it finally happened.....Riding on a 45 mph straight road at 60mph to stay out of the damn surge range and a cop comes up behind me and nails me. He's a bike rider and writes me a warning. First conflict with a cop in twenty years. All over surge crap. I didn't even want to go that fast on that road. Buying a eng temp sensor and new plugs. If that don't do it shes outa hear.
