I was in autozone and found some filters, but the guy there thought they were made by fram, but on this board somone said they were made by champion labs? Who carries wix or mobile 1 filters? | ||

NAPA brand is a WIX product. Good stuff. Penzoil filters are re-badged Frams. | ||

NAPA / Wix would be your best choice to find locally. Ford V8 filters fit. If you want to order the Amsoil is even better. It's hard to keep up with Fram - since they make numerous different models. However any filter would be fine. Since you'll probably neveer keep the bike long engough to for you the see any benfit of a good oil filter. | ||

Here we have Pep Boys, where you can get the Purolater oil filters. I hear the Purolator Pure One filters are really good. | ||

Thanks for the replies. Napa and Pep Boys are all over around here. I find Napa to be over priced. Any other comments about the Purolator filters? | ||

I don't know that there is a lot of difference between fram and purolator, but as of Sept. 17 pennzoil, quaker state and performax filters will be made by purolator. | ||

I saw the same alarming web site that everybody else did saying "don't use fram", but I picked up a fram toughguard filter at wal-mart (the better end of the fram brand) and ran it. I didn't totally take it apart, but looking closely it appeared better made then the SuperTech (Champion labs) and Purolator filters I have used in the past. I don't know how many Fram filters are actually made by Fram, or how their quality differs, but it's usually fairly easy to pop the filter out of the box in the store and see if it looks well made or not. I replace them every 3500 miles anyway, so they are probably less then 1/3 used up when I pitch them. | ||

As I recall XB12 oil filter is the same as Toyota Prius or Corolla ... easy cross and many good filter makers. Puraltor pureone is my fav. Chas | ||

i got my 1997 m2 used and it had a chrome oil filter i looked no markings on it who sells chrome filters? | ||

Harley & Custom Chrome. Probably others. I suggest the Dyna model, Same thread & diameter, but it's longer & holds an extra 1/2 quart or so. That's for the Tube Frame models, like our M2's. XB's run a different filter.. (Message edited by aesquire on November 05, 2007) | ||

It seems like the an issue may be the pressure required to open bypass valves. I have been googling oil filters and think that cycle [at least for HD products] filters open around 8 psi, where some auto filters open around 12 psi [or higher]. Cold, thick oil plus a high pressure bypass could spell trouble. I have looked at quite a few sites that suggest that the oil filtering medium is the same in cars and bikes. The more I look, the more I think that it is better to stick with cycle filters for the former reason, PSI. As far as oil, it seems like OLDER articles suggest no difference between quality motor oil for cycles and cars except price. NEWER articles suggest that additives are specific to V-twin operation in so-called V-twin oils...I dunno? I ran 60 weight in my ironhead for 10 years, then switched to 20/50 and rode it for another 15 years with no ill effects. The decision to switch was made AFTER HD switched to 20/50 in EVO's. I realize that evo's run cooler, but the reasoning was oil flow at start up, especially in the Northeast weather. Didn't ride the sporty much when I moved to NC. I am gonna get a Dyna filter today, but stay with the Rotella 15/40 until about 1000 miles, seems to be ok in this cooler weather. |
