I have a 2000 X1, race kit, V&H exhuast, K&N air filter. It runs just great when it is dry outside but any time I ride in the mist or any rain at all, it stalls and surges, sputters so much I lose speed to the point of having to stop!! I live in washington and it rains all the freakin time so this is a huge problem for me. I have checked my wire connections and everything seems tight. Also if I put on a force air intake, will it suck in water? |

Most likely cause of stalling and cutting out in the wet is water getting into the high voltage connections at spark plugs, coil terminals or through the spark plug cable insulation and shorting out the spark. Best bet is to get new spark plug cables with tight fitting boots on the coil terminals and spark plug insulators. What I like to do is bond the rubber boots onto the cables at both ends with clear silicone sealer/adhesive, let dry and smear a dab of dielectric grease on the inside of the boots before installing the cables. That will pretty much water proof your ignition. For the Force intake, I think you can get a permeable cover that fits over the air filter. |
