I just purchased 2008 Ulysses from Tilly HD-Buell in Statesville, NC. Took easy 120 mile ride home. Various stops, etc. on the way varying engine RPMs. Fuel mileage was 39.8. (148.0 miles total on tank) I figured the low MPG was because tank was probably not full. Second tank of fuel was 37.6 mpg (146.1 miles). Again easy riding, did not exceed 4000 rpm. No where near the claimed fuel MPG of 51-64mpg. What mpg should I expect? I contacted the dealer and they said that they talked to Buell techs who stated mpg will improve with breakin, but they want it brought back to the dealer as the bike should be getting 50 minimum. What are other riders getting out of a gallon of fuel. Thanks guys... JB Also my email is JB2607@yahoo.com if you want to send your info to me directly.

I wouldn't think about the mileage untill after about 1000 miles. The dealer was right, the mileage will get better as the motor breaks in.

Untill then, Just enjoy your new bike!

Welcome to Badweb and congrats on the bike.

I generally get in the low to mid 40s. I have gotten as high as 53, when my riding consisted entirely of cruising down the interstate at 70 mph.

I would expect you to get better mileage, but what you're getting isn't terribly out of the ball park. Get your first 1000 miles and have the dealer look it over at the 1000 mile service if it hasn't improved.

Also, come over to the Carolina Corner Carvers area of the board. There are several of us scattered about the state. Carlos (m2nc) is going up to Virginia, not too far from you, this weekend and is looking for riding partners. It would be a fun way to break in your bike.

My best fuel mileage is 62mpg, that was cruising on the BRP between 55-60mph. My Uly usually gets between 42-45mpg around town, 48-52mpg on the interstate running 80-85mph, and 52-56mpg running on two lane highway 60-65mpg. On our trip to West Virginia weekend before last, the Uly got 53mpg running 70-75mph on the interest packed like this..

It actually got a couple more mpg than Webe's Uly with the Buell hard bags on.

I too have a 08 Uly. When I got it I only got 40 to 43 mpg. When I hit 1500 miles magic occurred and it started getting 50 to 53 mpg. Blue Ridge Pkwy 50 to 55 mph = 50mpg. Interstate 70mph = 48 to 50. Patience!

Follow-up... 3rd tank of fuel. 151.6 miles and 41.2 mpg. Starting to get into the mid range RPM's more steadily. Still haven't touched 5 grand yet (close), but staying over 4 grand normally. Bike now has 470 miles on it.

I have an 07 Uly with 6500 miles in just over 3 months. Worst tank 48.5, best 54, normally 50. This is better than most. I do not commute and only ride city to get thru town.

Wait until the engine is up to operating temps then don't be afraid to give it some RPM's.

"Wait until the engine is up to operating temps...." - Cycletlh

How do you gage this?

My Uly also had a starting problem at 525 miles. Fuel pump would not prime. (no distinctive whine/whirr of the fuel pump) Dealer picked it up and problem was a "corroded" connector at the fuel pump. They also put it on the computer and said all specs were normal. They said fuel mileage will improve with more miles on it. Who really knows... does make you wonder though.

"A few miles" is the generally given answer.

It's air cooled, so it should warm up quickly.

After 1470 miles, my 2008 XB9SX is still giving me 35-36 mi/gal. At the 1K service, the dealer told me that the mileage should improve towards the 2k miles. Let's see.

It would be interesting to put one of these bikes with lower than expected mileage on a dyno with a wide band oxygen sensor to ensure that the FI systems isn't dumping extra gas into the system.

Jb2607 - My 08 Uly has 9800 miles on it. Fuel mileage has always been an issue with me as I expected better since the advertised mpg is 50 - 60mpg. Running 3 or 4K steady I get 43 - 44 mpg. If I run hard on curves all day I get 47. Hit 53 only once since ownership. Traveling on this bike is iffy. 150 miles between fuel ups eliminates any west trips without carrying gas or adding a fuel cell. Fun bike though

Loucksg... I believe what you are telling me is probably the most accurate. It is just hard to understand that fuel mileage will magically get better after x amount of miles. Mine is exactly like yours so far. Low 40's as a general rule. My bike was also in the shop for a previous repair stated on this website and Tilley's claimed they tested it on their equipment and said everything was normal.
We'll see but I am not the least bit optimistic. All that aside, I LOVE it!

My Uly gets low to mid 40's and range has never been a problem. I live out west and have traveled all over the U.S.

Think about it, just 40mpg will get you 175 miles on a tank, 45mpg will give you a 200 mile range. That's a lot of riding and I usually need a break anyway.

Another observation. Immediately after my 30k service, my mpg shot up dramatically, from low 40's to close to 50mpg. It has gradually come back down to low 40's, but I noticed this improved mileage for several tank fulls. Not sure how this could happen, unless the motor is getting an inconsistent pull of air and the ECM is adjusting. But I'm not sure if that is possible.

May i say ...maybe someone adjusted the throttle cables correctly at a service and did both the tps and afv reset correctly ...also you can get an additional fuel improvement going synthetic...one of our techs get 3miles to the gallon better fuel with the syn.

Same Engine....different Frame, and I'm getting about 35 ~ 38 MPG. It started out at around 50. But 7000 miles later, I'm a little more twist happy, so I think that might have a little something to do with it.
