ok gents, i've been all over the knowledge vault for known problems and can't find one that matches mine.

here it is...

i put in the key and give it a turn. lights come on, needles sweep, fuel pump spins, engine light goes out. all normal, right? then thumb the starter and i get one solid click from (what i believe is) the starter. all the dash lights go blank, except the hi-beam indicator comes on. thumb the starter again and i get nothing.

then, i turn the key back to the off position and a few seconds later the needles sweep (in the off position). if i put the key back in i only get the hi-beam light on the dash and no noise from the fuel pump.

now here comes the weird part...

if i smack the top of the rear of the seat. hard. before i put the key back in, it starts like there's never been an issue.

all the battery cables are tight. none of the fuses are blown. once it's running, everything is fine. this happens when it's cold and when it's hot. i replaced the battery last month, so i doubt that's it.

any ideas?

thanks in advance,
CJ

Not weird at all, fairly common.

Either your battery terminals are not clean and firmly connected, or you misrouted the wiring from your ECM after installing a race module of something and they have been nicked by the sharp edge of the battery terminal.

Pull off the seat, remove, clean, and reconnect the battery terminals with the manual suggested torque, and it will probably be "all better".

Reep... the ecm hasn't been touched for over a year, the battery is fresh and terminals are clean and torqued guten tite! once i'm off duty i'll have a couple days to go through every single loom under the seat and make sure nothing has rubbed through.

Doz... i always finish with an, "ehhhhh" and my buddies are already calling me The Fonz!

does anyone think it could be the little plastic clip that goes into the starter solenoid on the right side above the engine case?

Is the ECM bundle routed such that it lays on a sharp edge of one of the battery terminals?

That was the problem with mine (self induced). There was a microscopic nick that would periodically ground out one wire.

Still *sounds* like a loose battery terminal... it sounds like you are on the right track and doing thing right.

The starter relay is another area of historical "fussyness" on tubers, less so on an XB, but it's still a mechanical piece that can fail.

reep, which of the three gray and black boxes is the starter relay? the harness doesn't seem to be contacting the battery on any of the sharper edges, but perhaps the rubber stopper on the bottom of my corbin has pinched something.

i'm gonna take a nap now, and look at it in a few hours.

Dunno... I never had to go that far.

If somebody does not chime in, I can look at the manual tonight (it's at home).
