I was just looking at the shop manual for my XB12Ss regarding Cooling Fan removal and replacement. Has anyone done this? Do you REALLY have to remove the shock, or does it just make things a little easier and with patience you can do it WITHOUT removing the shock?

I removed the shock so I can't comment on whether it must be done or not. If you can support the bike, removing the shock is not difficult.

Yeah, that's the problem. Guess I'm going to have to spring for a couple of track stands...

Thanks.
