I am new to the whole motorcycle world and have some questions/concerns about upgrading the exhaust system on my Buell. I apologize if this is a stupid question.

I currently own a 2005 XB9SX and I am wanting to upgrade the exhaust. The only mod I have done is the 07 inner airbox. I want to know if I can run the Race Muffler without the Race ECM. My main concern is the sound of the bike, not necessarily the performance. I think the bike runs great as it is, but I would like more sound from it. Doing the entire "stage 2" kit is not too cheap. Therefore, I was hoping I could get away with just adding the race muffler alone.

I have been looking around various sites trying to get information but I have not been able to find an exact answer. It seems that everyone that has a new muffler/exhaust has the Race ECM. Is anyone else currently just running an aftermarket muffler with no change in filter or ECM? What are your opinions or advice on this? Would this hurt the bike any or will the ride quality suffer? I have read that the bike may run lean, but is there any truth to this? Will the stock ECM adjust accordingly after the pipe is installed or is the Race ECM 100% necessary?

Thanks in advance

Do not run the race exhaust and stock ECM, it WILL run like crap, Iknow, I did it. I have the same bike as you, but an '06. The Race ECM and exhaust were designed to be used together.

After doing many hours of research and speaking with several Buell technicians, I have found my answers. Thanks to all that replied.
