hey all! i just bought my first Buell a month ago. Mint 2000 X1 Lightning. its actually my first v-twin.
i bought it with only 5k miles and its super clean! one red flag i had was it needed a new clutch. 5k miles and a new clutch? sounds like it was rode hard and put away wet.
So i had it installed by a local dealer, which in my opinion doesn’t do good work, and now after about 400 miles a clunking noise is coming from what sounds like the primary drive. Now it does clunks only after it warms up. I adjusted my chain tension and it seems to be fine.
I read all the posts about this issue and no one mentioned the sound after warm up and no one really posted the real issue they had, just speculations. I know the bike well. I had the piston in my hand three days ago and today I road it to work. So if you were I, what would be your first bolt you'd remove?

Congrats on the X1. When does it make the clunk sound? Clutch in, clutch out, at shift? When moving or stopped? What is the frequency of the sound, road speed, engine speed or much slower?

I figured it out when i realized the dealer never put tranny oil in when the new clutch was put in. I bought the revised primary chain adjuster and now all is well. Minus still some cluncking noise. I think the adjuster is still bumping up against the LH cover. I will look into it, but it seems to be fine. It is very hard to hear all the ticking and clunking after everyone tells me its a Harley. Thats how they all sound. Why noy construct these engines with a tighter tolerance?
I think I have the bike dialed in now. I will embark on a trip from Saint Louis MO to Detroit Michigan this Labor day weekend for a good shake down ride.

OMT- I bought a racing ECm and billet air intake filter and man what a difference! It does throttle wheelies now!

I believe that HD designed there engines to be robust with little concern with trivial things as noise. We can debate the loses caused by noise, but as a group (motorcyclist) we are a picky group. This of course is one of the characteristics that contributes to the Buell soul. Just learn the noises that don't belong and enjoy the torque and the curves. Nice job on finding the problem.
