Generally noise is the first clue. A lifter can collapse where it doesn't fill with oil whether due to wear or the check valve is plugged. This results in slop in the lifter that can be heard as a loud ticking noise. Sometimes a lifter will click when starting up and become quiet after a few minutes. This is normal but if it continues then there could be something wrong.

A needle bearing in the roller part of the lifter can jam or break causing the roller to skid and ruin the cam. There would be a lot of loud mechanical clatter on the right side of the engine with loss of power. If not shut down immediately, metal bits and pieces would likely find their way to the oil pump destroying it and the engine if allowed to continue.

I rebuilt my top end a few years ago and had 4 bad lifters, one had chrome chipped out of the bore, and the other 3 had excessive roller sideplay. They had only around 15,000 miles on them. They usually should be checked around 40,000 miles.

We had a Sceamin' Eagle lifter on a Twin Cam in the shop a few weeks ago that had a roller failure. That was ugly. Everything within the cam chest pretty much grenaded.

Hi, I had symptoms like the above, was riding at 70 mph, heard a loud "phssssst" and then loud tapping from what seemed like top end. Got louder and louder, was able to get it home, but now loud clatter in motor and idle stuck at 2,000 rpm. My oil light went on and oil temp gauge stopped working. Collapsed lifter? Valves hitting piston? Any ideas?
Thanks! Christian

Mine started when I had started the bike after sitting for a bit. It sounded like someone was hammering on the bottom of the rocker boxes.
