I was on the phone with American Sportbike today ordering a couple things, and asked them about the possibility of making an LED brake light (they are going to get back to me on it) similar to their current one (with the red center and flashing amber side signals), except like this:

No amber integrated turn signals (my mini LEDs are pretty bright by themselves!), but instead to have THAT part light up RED (like the middle of the brake light will) and FLASH.

But not flash forever, just for the initial few seconds after you hit the brake, then the entire light would glow RED, as a normal brake light. Obviously, this would be a GREAT way to attract attention to the person behind you (we bikers need all the help we can get!), yet it wouldn't annoy the s**t out of them as it would if it flashed the entire time the brake was applied.

So:

Can this be done?

Does anyone else currently make something like this (for any brand of bike)?

Just curious (I'm a n00b!). I have the clear lens from American Sport Bike on with the incandescent red bulb, but I really want to get a BRIGHT LED brake light in there instead.

Thanks for your time.

We've already had a customer do it. We had one of the integrated turn signals built with all red LEDs, no amber, in the turn signal positions. The regular brake line was fed to the normal tail/brake lights. The red "turn signal" lEDs were connected to a brake light modulator (http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-p rodshow/16051.html)

When you brake with this setup, the center section goes bright red and stays that way. The outer sections flash. It's very effective, and very bright. Ping me with an email at work and I'll send you a short mpg that show is working. Not cheap, but REALLY gets your attention from the rear.

That sounds GREAT, Al.

But does it flash ALL the time??

===

edit: Well I just googled this modulator, and it sounds like JUST what i want.

I want to order this setup from you. Please call or email and let me know how much and how soon you could make it happen.

I've already asked by board supplier to send one of the ones I have on order with all red LEDs.

Brandon,
Send your email address to:

and I'll forward you a cool little video of the tail light working like this. It's pretty neat, and sure to get anyone's attention behind you.

I installed an LED Tail Light and License Plate Relocator from American Sport Bikes this weekend an am REALLY happy with it! The best feature, was a modulator American Sport Bike provided to turn the integrated turn signals into strobes that flash when the brakes are applied.

The url's for the items I installed follow:
http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-p rodshow/9037.html
http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-p rodshow/9031.html

You need the modulator to make the integrated turn signals flash, Al at American Sport Bike can hook you up, as I don't have a link.

I think this is the best money I have spent in a long time!

I normally have the integrated turn signals on the board built with amber LEDs for the turn signals.

Toby and another customer had one built special with Red LEDs in place of the turn signals, and wired those to a Kisan tail light modulator.

I have one in stock with the red LEDs in the turn signal position. But I can get more built that way for interested folks.

This is the raw card, you would need to bond it into your existing housing using suitable adhesive, and terminate the wires with the right connectors. I use Electronics grade RTV, and I also pot the wires coming out of the rear with it.

http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-p rodshow/9038.html
This is the turn-key tail light, complete with a clear tail light lens and wires terminated. Hook up 5 wires, two screws, and your done.

This is the brake light modulator:
http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-p rodshow/16051.html .

This will work with any Buell Tail light, LED or not, but hooked into the red side "Turn Signal" LEDs on the integrated unit, looks the biz.
