I'm trying to capture the EEprom with the Palm, and transfer it to the PC, so I don't have to drag the PC to the garage every time.

I have two 2003 xb9's.
The R is stock, and the Palm seems to capture everything, but after I transfer it to the PC, the chart is only about 2/3 the size of other charts I have seen.?

The S has a Race ecm, and it seems like the ecm "times out" or goes to "sleep" about halfway through the transfer, and connection is lost.?

Guess I'll be draggin' the PC to the garage for anything more than a TPS reset.

(edited for spelling)

Tank,

You probably need to get one of the RS-232 experts involved here or get some help from someone like that. It might be a simple as changing a COM port setting. I think it is the timeout setting or something like that.

It might be a system setting under Win98 or XP or maybe in an *.ini file.

It sounds like something that I had a passing acquaintance with some years ago, about a COM port timing out to quick to get all the data. And there were further complications in that case, involving NAK's or something like that.

I think you guys are closing in on a wonderful thing here, the ability for people to do simple and necessary diagnostic and tuneup things.

Who knows, I may get beyond CV-40's some day and need this info too.

Thanks for the insight.

The Palm Tungsten E2 that I am using(and other units as well) use TTL level communication, same as the ECM. So there is no need for RS232 adapters or COM settings. I made a cable to go straight from the Palm to the ECM.

It works well, but it seems that the Palm won't keep the ecm "awake" long enough for the download?

I must admit, this is an area where I have little idea what I'm talking about, but I want to learn even if it's just because it's cool.

Okay, thanks for the explanation on that.

I've often had GPS receivers that had a TTL pair but I've never used that pair.

The ECM Spy FAQ page says "To connect to you PC you have to convert the TTL to RS232 data levels" and I guess I assumed that something similar was happening on the Palm.

The choices now are either a PC or a Palm. I don't see any mention of a Pocket PC or Windows Mobile version.

I sort of wonder if an iPAQ or other Pocket PC device that had a RS-232 COM port wouldn't be a more stable platform than a Palm for the handheld end? I know I found that to be the case for using GPS on handheld devices.

Thats just because:

1) Much of that palm software was written by Delorme. Scary stuff, that.

2) The Palm just lacked the horsepower to keep up, and lacked the power to drive RS232 for extended periods.

Those RS232 GPS units were just as flakey on my PC as they were on the palm...

: )

Is there a way to change the language on ECM SPY to english?

Anyone have the maps for the various RACE ECM's available yet?

My above post is making the assumption that the only difference between a race ECM and the standard ECM is the fuel and Ign maps.

Found the race EEPROM for the x1 (maybe euro??) thanks to someone on another forum. Claims to have been using it successfully in his street buell for months. I havn't tested it yet because I am waiting on the cable to come to me but if anyone else wants to PM me.

I can't wait to convert my standard ECM to a Race ECM for the cost of a cable.

Ive found that the majority of USB or Serial to Palm or cell phone data cables are in fact USB TTL level cables, and will work out of the box if you find out which pins are RX TX and GND.

Here is a recourse containing several cable pin outs. http://pinouts.ru/CellularPhones-P-W/

Well the race ecm eeprom is for a euro model X1, and doesn't seem to work on the US model. It does load, but then the bike throws up CEL's for TPS short to ground, IAT (SAME) and an UNK error code.

So I exported the fuel maps and then went back to the stock eeprom, and imported the race fuel maps. I know that things will be off because the race IGN map isn't.

Anyone have a US Model TUBER, with a race ecm, that you would care to share the eeprom?

I made up the cable as described above and as of now I have reset to TPS on two different bikes. Both run better than ever. I wish this had came out years ago.

The ecm spy website shows that ecm spy does not support the 2006 xb12 with the race ecm. Has anyone used it and does it work?

You could likely get away with loading the stock version at startup.

It shouldn't make a difference as long as you are only resetting the TPS or AFV.

Double check the values before you change anything, though. If they seem out of whack, or waaay not likely, don't change anything!

Just a reminder to all using this. (and this probably doesn't really need to be said... but Imma say it anyhoo)

MAKE SURE YOUR SAVE YOUR INITAIL ECM INFROMATION TO A SAFE PLACE BEFORE YOU MAKE ANY MODIFICATIONS!! THAT WAY IF YOU SCREW UP, YOU CAN RELOAD THE ORIGINAL DATA.}

This has been a buellic service announcement. We now return you to your original programming. Thank you.

Enabling or disabling the Interactive Exhaust Valve is now possible on both the Stock and Race XB12 Ecm thanks to a guy named Steve at UK Buell Enthusiasts Group. I have tried this and it works. I am now using the exhaust valve in the Special Ops pipe with the Race Ecm. You could also disable it in the Stock Ecm and disconnect the servo without any fault codes. Here is how to do it with EcmSpy.

Just change the hex value at a certain address in the eeprom data. The location is different for different ecm's.

A hex 19 disables the valve.
A hex 99 enables the valve.

GB231 is the Race Ecm and the location of the value is at 001FE.

IB310 is the Stock Ecm and the value is at location 00204.

I don't take credit for this mod just passing it along "thanks Steve".

+1 on Ratyson's post backup and save your eeprom and put it away for safe keeping.

Mark

I have seen mention, that it is not happening. The way I understand it, they developed the program to do what they needed to do, and it will not go much farther, if at all.
