I have a 2007 uly,what do you think about runnig mobile one 15w-50 in the primary and in the engine both ? | ||

Lots of people have, especially in the engine. It's my first choice for a winter oil (I ride down to fairly low temperatures). For summer use, I prefer to get a true 20w50 (Castrol Syntec 20w50 or Valvoline Full Synthetic 20w50 are usually easy to find). The Harley full synthetic oil is the right weight and is good oil as well, so is Mobil 1 VTwin. You pay a premium for these oils, what you provably get for that extra money is piece of mind... any other benefits are speculative. For the gearcase now, I just use the new full synthetic harley trans oil. I don't have to change it often, it only takes one quart so cost is not a big deal, and it seems to be very good stuff. The only possible downside to Mobil 1 (either 15w50 motor oil or Mobil 1 gear oil) is that we can't be sure if it does or does not attack the stator insulation / connection points / windings. Of course, we can't be sure the Harley oil doesn't either. And many Buell miles have been ridden with Mobil 1 15w50 in the tranny. And we are all tired of arguing about it  | ||

15w50 will work WONDERFULLY in both the engine and tranny (it's actually rated as a GL-4 gear oil). Let's end the controversy here and now. YOU CAN USE MOBIL ONE 15w50 ENGINE OIL IN THE TRANSMISSION. IT IS NOT CORROSIVE TO YOUR STATOR OR INSULATION. The controversy is with "GL-5 gear oils" only! If you're not sure if you want to use these gear oils in your tranny then get with the oil vendor. | ||

Does anyone like the Harley synthetic oil. I hear it is made by Sunoco. ( I have used Mobile one in cars for YEARS! without problems, but the dealer (and we know what experts they are) say not to use the Mobil one. I like Amsoil too, but it is expensive! | ||

Hotdog - I don't think there is anything wrong with SYN-3. I think most peoples objection to it comes from the fact that the price is jacked up because it says Harley Davidson on the container. Lots of people use Mobile 1 20W50 Vtwin or 15W50 automotive oil in their engines, myself included. It used to be popular to run Mobile 1 gear lube in the primary, but there is some evidence that it eats the startors. Buell changed the transmissions in 06 to use helical cut gears, and recommend using formula+ in the primary on those bikes. I have been reluctant to use Mobile 1 in my 06 primary because I don't know if it was designed to deal with the shear forces generated by the helical gears. I think HD later said SYN-3 was ok for those transmissions, so Mobile 1 is probably ok, but I have not confirmed that. | ||

How many years does it take for suspect oils to attack the stator windings? I've been running Mobil 1 in all our HD engined primaries and trannies with no apparent ill affect. I run Mobile 1 in the engines of anything that doesn't consume more oil than fuel. Our Blasts are very bad about oil consumption and my 2002 FXD is VERY VERY good about it. Everything else is in the middle. | ||

Bill (reepicheep) commented on how he didn't know if the 15-50 (an engine oil) was known to attack the stator. I was just saying that my experience shows that it doesn't. -Saro | ||

Royal Purple is carried by every motorcycle dealer in my area, primary use is for motorcycles, especially air cooled. Very well known in this are and most people run it in their bikes, air or water cooled. |
