I would like to switch to some Repsol 20w50 synthetic oil for my 1997 S3T. Currently using HD 20W50 non-synthetic. They also have 15W40. Any thoughts or ideas. I have read some amazing stuff about this oil and MotoGP uses it also.

Thanks!

Im trying out 15-40 Royal purple right now in my Firebolt, I know this stuff is the shit in the drag racing world... No strange noises, The fan doesnt seem to come on as much, but there are too many variables to really know. I need a temperature gauge ! ! But I have a feeling I should switch to 20/50 when the outside temperature starts to really start to heat up...as long as the sae rating is the same , 20/50 15/40.. whats the difference beside a little better gas mileage and possibly some increased H.P. ?
has anyone else tried Royal Purple?
The harley dealership mechanic told me I shouldnt use synthetic oil cause it doesnt pump up the lifters like using the H.D. 20/50 and causes valve noises..I think he is part sales person.......lol

I'll let ya know on the Royal Purple. I just did my first 500 mile change on both engine and primary. I've used Royal Purple in old turbo street cars and in my old 61 Nova drag car. That stuff is as good as oil gets. The engine oil looked real good and there where zero particles on the drain plug. I'm gonna cut the oil filter open and inspect the media.

I will say I was VERY suprised at how many metal shaving were on the primary drain bolt. I did go with the Harley Formula+ for the primary gear box. This is my first Harley product after many Jap bikes and I'm a bit nervous.

Oh yea , I am using a wix oil filter also, so Im gonna want to open up that filter too, I had a lot of metal shavings on that oil plug when I drained it for its 2nd oil change at 2700 miles...so im curious to see as well...

What wix filter number did you use? Have you looked at it, I wanted to install one on my bike, but couldn't find the part number?

I've been using RP in my M2 for years. I used to use Valvoline and after switching to fully synth RP 20/50 I noticed a bit more valvetrain noise, but it seems that is the difference between dino and synth. I've had it in 9r for about 1500 miles now and I like it in there also.

JUST MY OPINION

I use formula plus in my tranny/primary case. (tiny metal sparkle and almost like drill dust in oil is normal dont worry)

and dare I say I use regular H-D 20w50 in my motor.....yes. But it does consume oil because its fossil oil. Synthetic does have me beat there. But I feel the bike has a more gradual heat exchange with fossil oil. Not such a fast change with oil temp during heat cycle.

The metal flake in the drain pan is seriously a complant at work, dont be alarmed. Its common on all harley's I dunno about other makes. The sportster clutch and primary system isnt exactly the cleanest running, hence you being prompted to change the oil in the whole bike each time you change the engine oil. If you got a full drain plug that looks like that wooly willy magnet face thing had when you were a kid, just make sure its all very fine like pencil shavings from the graphite. Otherwise you will feel sharp peices on the tip, then I would start running a bigger magnet thru the oil to make sure there isnt anything else.
