Have a quick question. To adjust the primary chain, I believe I found a "thread" in the archives. Have a 2001 M2. It stated to: with 1/4 allen wrench place in the bottom of the bolt..."break loose". Using a 7/8 open end tighten/loosen in 1/8 in intervals. Is that correct?. Thanks for the help. Z

No. You'll need to open the inspection cover and measure the chain free play at it's tightest point in its travel around the sprockets. Set to between 1/2" and 5/8" for a cold engine/tranny. Double check free play after tightening tensioner shoe adjustment bolt.

Mike,

What Blake said for doing it right.

If I were away from home and tools, and heard my primary chain making the "I'm too tight!" whirring noise, or heard it slapping the inside of the primary cover, I'd do an adjustment to the way you say.

And the way to do it is to hold the bolt with an Allen wrench and break the nut loose with a 7/8" open end. Then I'd loosen it if too tight or tighten it if too loose. And I'd do it about 1/8th of a turn at a time because a little bit of movement there goes a long ways.

The service manual's recommended torque spec for the locking nut is a bit on the high side, trying to meet it may have caused stripped threads on that bolt in the past. I would snug it down by feel and err on the low side of the torque specs.

The service manual is a good investment if you don't have one, with that and the info in the BadWeb's KV, you can be assured that your M2 will be a national treasure in another 40 or 50 years.
